Mr. Shalam has been serving as the Chair of Voxx International Corporation (formerly Audiovox Corporation), headquartered in Hauppauge, NY and Orlando, FL since 2005. A car stereo and cellular telephone company executive for many years, he founded the organization in 1960 as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. He remained in those positions for 45 years. Mr. Shalam formerly served as President for Custom Imports, Inc. between 1961 and 1963 and Vice President for Lynn Supply Company in New York City between 1958 and 1961. He was also an executive trainee and trader for the U.K. Department of Continental Grain Company in New York City from 1955 to 1958.
He currently serves as the company's Chairman. Through its varied wholly-owned subsidiaries, VOXX International is an international leader in the marketing of premium speaker systems, consumer electronics and a variety of mobile electronics that include mobile multimedia, vehicle security and mobile video systems and their related accessories. The company is listed on the NASDAQ and had sales for fiscal year 2017 of $681 million. Shalam is a member of the Wharton School Club of NY; member of the Ben Franklin Society, University of Pennsylvania and a former member of the JP Morgan / Chase Bank Metropolitan Advisory Board. He is a life member of Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity; officer of La Chaine Des Rotisseurs (NY Chapter); member of the Ordre Mondial Du Vin; Fondateur de L'Academie Brillat-Savarin; past President and Director of the Old Westbury Horsemen's Foundation; and the Glen Oaks Golf & Country Club in Old Westbury, NY; La Chaine Des Rotisseurs (Palm Beach Chapter), as well as the High Ridge Club, and the Mar-a-Lago Club, both in Palm Beach, Florida.
Shalam serves on the Board of Industry Leaders (BIL) of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), and is Chairman of CTA's Investment Committee as well as Chairman Emeritus of CTA's Charitable Foundation. He was instrumental in helping CTA become an active participate in the Wireless Communications Industry, establishing the Wireless Communications Division in 2001, and acting as its first and founding chairman. Shalam was inducted into the CTA Hall of Fame in October 2009. In 1997, he received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. In November 2012, Shalam was honored by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and received their Lifetime Achievement Award. In April 2014, he was honored with CTA's Digital Patriot Award in Washington, DC. On January 2018, he was inducted in the Dealerscope Hall of Fame Class of 2018.
Shalam received a bachelor's degree in economics from Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He is married to Jane Shalam, with whom he has three sons, Ari, David and Marc, and eight grandchildren.
