Colin W. Wrigley, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Accruing six decades of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Wrigley has been recognized as an honorary research fellow of Food Science Australia in Sydney from 2001 to 2009, and as Honorary Professor at the University of Queensland from 2011 to 2020. He began his professional career as a teaching fellow of the University of Sydney in 1959, and research fellow during 1960, before serving as an experimental scientist at the CSIRO Wheat Research Unit in Sydney from 1961 to 1963. After completing a second research fellowship at the university between 1964 and 1967, Dr. Wrigley returned to CSIRO for three years before receiving a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada.

Returning once again to CSIRO as a research scientist from 1970 to 1983, Dr. Wrigley moved up the ranks to officer-in-charge from 1983 to 1997 and consultant from 1997 to 2007. During this time, he served CSIRO as a post-retirement fellow for three years and as a scientific consultant at his own company, Wrigley Consulting, from 2001 to 2009. Dr. Wrigley also taught as an Honorary Professor at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, from 2011 to 2019.

In addition to this tenure, Dr. Wrigley chaired the research advisory committee of Gradipore Ltd. and was a doctoral student advisor at the University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales and the University of Western Sydney. He was also a project consultant for the Cooperative Research Centre for Value Added Wheat in Sydney. His area of expertise as a food scientist is grains, specifically wheat and barley, covering the range from genetics, through production and processing to nutritional chemistry. Notably, he invented gel isoelectric focusing for the fractionation of proteins and the rapid visco-analyzer to characterize grain and starch quality. Dr. Wrigley also holds four patents on the processing and testing of cereal grains.

Prior to embarking on his professional path, Dr. Wrigley pursued a formal education at the University of Sydney, earning a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry, with honors, in 1959. Continuing his studies at the university, he went on to obtain a Master of Science in biochemistry in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy in agricultural chemistry in 1967. Since graduating, Dr. Wrigley has maintained activity within his local community, serving on the board of directors of Churches of Christ Nursing Home in Pendle Hill, Australia, from 1993 to 1995. In 2009, he was made a member of the Order of Australia. Additionally, he has co-authored seven books on Australian cereal varieties, contributed some 600 articles to professional journals, and served on editorial boards for many international journals. He was lead editor of the Encyclopedia of Grain Science in 2004 and the Encyclopedia of Food Grains in 2016.

A fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, Dr. Wrigley is an affiliate of many related organizations in his field. A life member of the American Association of Cereal Chemists, he has contributed to the International Association for Cereal Science and Technology and the Australasian Grain Science Association. Likewise, Dr. Wrigley was the founding president of the Australian Electrophoresis Society and a founding member of the International Electrophoresis Society.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Wrigley received the H.G. Smith Medal and the F.B. Guthrie Medal from the Royal Australian Chemical Institute in 1987 and 1988, respectively.

Furthermore, he was awarded the Thomas Burr Osborne Medal by the American Association of Cereal Chemists in 1992 and the Archibald Olle Literature Prize by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute in 2005. Today, Dr. Wrigley resides in Australia and is the proud father of four daughters, Christine, Jennifer, Robyn and Margaret. Moreover, he enjoys spending time with his 12 wonderful grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
