Dr. Suntzeff is a distinguished university professor at Texas A&M University who formerly taught as a full professor in the department of physics and astronomy between 2006 and 2013. An observational astronomer who works the fields of cosmology, supernovae, galaxy evolution and large-scale structure, stellar populations, astronomical site surveys and instrumentation, he has been in the field now for more than 35 years. Dr. Suntzeff has worked as an astronomer at the University of Washington, the Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena, and, most recently, at the U.S. National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO)/Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in La Serena, Chile, where he served as the associate director for science for NOAO between 2003 and 2006.

Twenty years ago, in 1998, Dr. Suntzeff co-founded the High-Z Supernova Team that discovered acceleration and the presence of dark energy in the universe. Working alongside several other astronomers, who won the Nobel Prize in physics for the research, it was Dr. Suntzeff who was actually responsible for initiating the discovery. In addition to his work on the Supernova Team, he also co-founded the Calan/Tololo Supernova Survey, which established Type Ia supernovae as the most precise markers for measuring cosmological distances.

During his career, Dr. Suntzeff has contributed articles to the Astronomical Journal, Astronomical Society Pacific, and Astronomy and Astrophysics, among other scholarly publications. He is a longstanding member of the American Astronomical Society, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, the International Astronomical Union, the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
