Dr. Robert J. Gerety is a former medical director of the U.S. Public Health Service.

With more than 40 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Gerety most recently served as the chief development officer of Medicine in Need in Cambridge, MA, from 2007 to 2012. He began his professional career as a research associate in the department of medical microbiology at Stanford University Medical School in 1969, remaining in this position for one year before completing an internship in pediatrics and residency at the school. Dr. Gerety then served separate one-year terms as a staff associate at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Laboratory for Viral Immunology and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Bureau of Biologics before directing the FDA hepatitis branch in Bethesda, MD, from 1973 to 1984. Following this long tenure, he served the FDA as the associate director of medicine and science and the chief infectious diseases branch from 1984 to 1985.
Continuing on his professional path, Dr. Gerety accepted the posts of the executive director of virus and cell biology and the chief of clinical evaluation of vaccines and antiviral drugs at the Merck Research Laboratories in West Point, PA from 1985 to 1989. He subsequently served as the vice president, the president, and the chief executive officer for several companies in Massachusetts and California, including Biogen, Inc., the Immulogic Pharmaceutical Corporation, ORAVAX, Cell Gate Inc., Inhale Therapeutic Systems, and Nektar Therapeutics. In addition to these roles, Dr. Gerety chaired the product development team and taught medicine at the Thomas Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia in 1985. A plenary lecturer at the International Symposium on Viral Hepatitis and Liver Disease in London in 1987, he also participated on the executive committee of the Nektar Business Review.
The medical director of the U.S. Public Health Service from 1970 to 1985, Dr. Gerety has celebrated many important career achievements. He significantly contributed to the development and/or approval of a vaccine against Hepatitis A and B, many pediatric vaccines including Hemophilus Influenza B and varicella, Biogen's beta interferon product to treat multiple sclerosis, also known as Avonex, and a direct thrombin inhibitor, more commonly known as Angiomax. Furthermore, Dr. Gerety holds several patents for the inactivation of a non-Hepatitis A and B agent, a Hepatitis B immune globulin used to inactivate the Hepatitis B virus in injectable biological products, and the detection of non-Hepatitis A and B associated antigen. Other patents to his credit include a heat treatment of a non-Hepatitis A and B agent to prepare a vaccine, a Hepatitis B core antigen vaccine made by recombinant DNA, a purified antigen from a non-Hepatitis A and B causing factor, and a screening test for reverse transcriptase containing viruses in human blood.
Prior to the beginning of his illustrious career, Dr. Gerety pursued a formal education at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, earning a Bachelor of Arts, with special honors, in 1962. He then enrolled at Stanford University, obtaining a Master of Arts in 1966 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1971. During this time, he graduated with a Doctor of Medicine from the George Washington University in 1970. Additionally, Dr. Gerety is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners.
A prolific writer, Dr. Gerety has contributed over 200 articles to scientific journals and held the post of an editor for "Non-A, Non-B Hepatitis" in 1981, "Hepatitis A" in 1984, and "Hepatitis B" in 1985. He was also an editorial board member for Biologicals between 1990 and 1994. A fellow of the Infectious Disease Society of America, Dr. Gerety remains aware of the latest trends in his field through his affiliations with the American Medical Association, the American Society for Microbiology, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Association of Immunologists. Likewise, he has maintained his involvement with the William Beaumont Society, the Henry Rutgers Society, the International Association for Biological Standards, and the International Society of Interferon Research.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Gerety received a Commendation Medal from the U.S. Public Health Service in 1975. A Henry Rutgers and NIH fellow, he also accepted an Outstanding Service Medal in 1982, the Patriotic Service Award from the U.S. Department of the Treasury in 1983, and the Distinguished Service Medal in 1985. Moreover, Dr. Gerety was selected for inclusion in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
