With 36 years of academic experience to his credit, Dr. Metaferia has worked as a professor at Morgan State University in Baltimore since 1995. He previously lectured at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Maryland, from 1983 to 1995. More recently, he served as a senior scholar and Fulbright fellow at Tel Aviv University in Israel in 2018. Dr. Metaferia grew up during the height of the Cold War. The different political and student movements throughout the world, such as the civil rights movement in the United States and students uprising in Africa and Latin America, made him interested in going into political science.
Originally from Gore, Ethiopia, Dr. Metaferia came to the United States in 1973 for higher education. He pursued his education at the University of Nebraska, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1975. He then attended the University of New Orleans, where he received a Master of Arts in 1977. Dr. Metaferia went to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy from Howard University in Washington in 1983.
Civically, Dr. Metaferia served on the board of directors for the Ethiopian Community Center in Washington from 1997 to 2000, which works to empower immigrants from Africa and other countries to become self-sufficient and contributing members of the society. A prolific writer, he has authored numerous books, book chapters, and articles in professional journals. He has also provided his comments of African, Ethiopian, and American politics on television and in other media. Dr. Metaferia keeps updated of trends in his field through affiliations with numerous organizations. He has maintained involvement with the American Association of University Professors, the American Political Science Association, the African Studies Association and the African Association of Political Science.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Metaferia was selected as a Fulbright-Hay fellow in Namibia, Burrma, Thailand, China and Peru in different years and he published several articles about his experiences. Furthermore, he was selected for inclusion in the 56th edition of Who's Who in America. Today, Dr. Metaferia resides in Maryland with his loving wife, Maigenet Shifferraw, with whom he has raised three wonderful children: Tigist, Helina and Kaleb. Additionally, he is a doting grandfather to two beloved grandchildren, Sela and Kidus.
