Teris Kim Schery, Ph,D, celebrates a career that has spanned more than four decades, She initially worked as a clinician and research assistant at the Institute for Childhood Aphasia, associated with the Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, CA, from 1966 until 1970, She went on to work from 1970 to 1981 as a program specialist in communication disorders for the Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools Office where she worked with a five person Jiagnostic team to set up an educational program for young children with specific language learning difficulties, This ultimately included over 300 special classes for children throughout Los Angeles County, In 1980 she joined the faculty at California State University, Los Angeles, serving as an associate professor and then a professor of communication disorders between 1981 and 1992. After relocating to Nashville, TN, in 1993, she served 15 years as a research professor in the departments of human and organizational development and in special education at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University with a secondary appointment in the Division of Hearing and Speech Sciences at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, retiring from instructional duties in 2008.

During her lifetime commitment to academic work in school and clinical settings, Dr. Schery has collaborated with research colleagues to apply evolving research on early linguistic development into practical intervention strategies for children with language learning difficulties in both individual and classroom settings, This work has influenced the training of teachers of special education, educators of the deaf, and speech-language pathologists, as well as directly helping children develop communication skills in the school programs and clinics that she supervised, As a consultant in the field since 1970, she has contributed numerous articles to professional journals, chapters to relevant books and monographs, as well as consistently conducting seminars, lectures and workshops for appropriate audiences.

While establishing herself as a trusted voice in the field, Dr. Schery pursued expanded knowledge through continuing formal education, She first attended Stanford university obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1965 and a Master of Arts in 1966. After working in the field for a number of years, she continued her studies at Claremont Graduate University and ultimately graduated in 1980 with a Doctor of Philosophy degree, She earned a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) in 1966 and continues to maintain this prerequisite for clinical practice.

Dr. Schery was recognized with the California State University Outstanding Professor Award in 1991, and was elected to the Educational Honor Society Phi Kappa Phi by students of the university in 1992, She was selected as a Fellow of the American Speech Language Hearing Association in 1985 and was awarded specialty board recognition in child language in 2002, She served in the nationally elected office of Vice President for Clinical Affairs of ASHA 1988-1991. She was a Fulbright teaching grantee to India through the United States Fulbright Foundation from 1985 to 1986, From 1978 through 1990, her research was supported by grants from the U. S. Office of Education, Bureau of Education for the Handicapped, and California State University System competitions. In more recent years, she has been awarded training grants from the U.S. Office of Special Education programs to train speech pathologists, audiologists and teachers of deaf children to work in teams to develop oral language in children with cochlear implants in rural Tennessee school settings.

Dr. Schery maintained membership with several professional organizations, including the California Speech-language-Hearing Association, the Tennessee Association of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists, The Society for Research in Child Development, the Council for Exceptional Children, and The American Educational Research Association. She was the publications board chair of the California and the Tennessee Speech and Hearing Associations from 1983-2002, served on the Editorial Boards of and assumed related editorial duties for several national professional publications, including Editor of DCCD New Times (CEC) from 2001-2005, Associate Editor, Language, Speech and Hearing Services in Schools (ASHA) 1983-1988.

In addition to her professional endeavors, she has worked as a garden guide at Cheekwood Botanical Garden in Nashville, TN and a volunteer for the Nashville Adult Literacy Program. She is a member of the Fulbright state program committee to welcome international Fulbright students to Tennessee. Since 1987, she has spent most summers in Ouray, Colorado, where she has volunteered with the Ouray County Arts Association, the Ouray County Historical Society, and supported community development as a Friend of the Wright Opera House.

In light of her occupational achievements, Dr. Schery was honored in the third edition of Who's Who Among Human Service Professionals, the first edition of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, the 21" edition of Who's Who in the West, and the second edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.

Dr. Schery was born on April 15, 1943, in St. Louis, MO to mother Lois Keller Schery and father Robert W. Schery, Ph.D. She married Mark W. Lipsey, Ph.D. Director of the Peabody Research Institute at Vanderbilt, on August 14, 1980 and together they are the proud parents of two children named Loren Christopher and Marisa Kim. She has one grandchild named Keller Dean. In her free time, she enjoys travelling, wine tasting, jeeping, hiking and taking photos. She is proud of both children. Loren has a law degree (University of Tennessee) and a Master of Public Policy (Georgetown University): he currently works in analytics/policy analysis in Washington, DC. Marisa has biology degrees from Middlebury College, the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and a Ph.D. from the University of Montana: she currently works in Montana as a conservation biologist for the U.S Department of Fish and Wildlife.
