Initially interested in pursuing medical technology, Dr. Seligson was encouraged to seek a profession in dietetics due to her interest in food and nutrition. Earning a Bachelor of Science from Drexel University in 1971, she later completed an internship in dietetics at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Subsequently, Dr. Seligson concluded her studies at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1976.
Following these accomplishments, Dr. Seligson began her career as an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1976 to 1977. Transitioning from academia to industry, she then served as a scientist for the Procter & Gamble Company in Cincinnati, OH, for the following decade. During her tenure in this position, Dr. Seligson was a co-inventor for a patent for food compositions with superior blood cholesterol-lowering properties and was a driving force behind the first calcium-fortified orange juice. From 1987 until her retirement in 2002, she excelled as Manager, Senior Manager and then Associate Director of Nutrition for Hershey Foods, now known as the Hershey Company, in Pennsylvania. Her primary responsibilities included managing nutrition scientific and regulatory issues and representing the company at scientific organizations and trade associations, serving as chair for several committees at these organizations. Upon her retirement from the Hershey Company, she was a consultant to many major food and beverage companies and nonprofit organizations and was a member of or a peer reviewer for several food and nutrition related committees of the Institute of Medicine. As a testament to her success, Dr. Seligson was featured in the 24th edition of Who's Who in the East in 1992.
Dr. Seligson fully retired at the end of 2016. To remain aware of developments in her field, she maintains her membership with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the American Society for Nutrition. To serve her local community, Dr. Seligson is a volunteer for the palliative care department at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Married to Michael Edward Seligson since 1975, she enjoys walking, swimming, bicycling, weightlifting, music and reading.
