Laurence "Larry" W. Fredrick Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA, May 16, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Laurence "Larry" W. Fredrick with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Fredrick celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Dr. Fredrick graduated from the Hershey orphanage in early 1945 and enlisted in the United States Navy, completing service in 1948. Subsequently, he pursued an education in Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, earning a BA in 1952 and an MA in 1954. He worked as an assistant with the Flower and Cook Observatory and the Sproul Observatory while pursuing his advanced study at the University of Pennsylvania where he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1959.

He took a position at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ developing imaging tubes for astronomical applications. In 1963 he was asked to rebuild the Astronomy Department at the University of Virginia and its Leander McCormick Observatory. This took him into teaching and other areas of academic life. He advanced to full professor and was named Vanderbilt Professor of Astronomy in 1972. He was a Fulbright-Hays exchange lecturer at the University of Vienna (1972-1973) an Associate Astronomer at the European Southern Observatory (1982-1983) and a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University (1991-1992.) During these years, Dr. Fredrick served as Secretary of the American Astronomical Society, numerous NASA committees, and was involved with the Hubble Space Telescope from 1965 to 2005.

A testament to his success, Dr. Fredrick was recognized as Alumnus of the Year by the Milton Hershey School in 1961. A member of the American Astronomical Society, he maintains affiliation with such organizations as the International Astronomical Union, the American Institute of Physics, the Universities Space Research Association, the Royal Astronomical Society, and the Society for Scientific Exploration. Outside of his career, Dr. Fredrick enjoys golfing and photography in his spare time.
