Dr. James L. Seago is a professor emeritus of biology who taught at State University of New York in Oswego for 46 years.

Dr. Seago is a professor emeritus of biology who taught at State University of New York in Oswego for 46 years. Initially hired in 1968 as an assistant professor, he later accepted the post of a full professor in 1991 and conducted extensive research in the ecological and developmental importance of roots to the success of wetland plants, environmental and population biology education as well as the use of research as a teaching tool in undergraduate biology education. Additionally interested in plant anatomy and development and root apical meristems, Dr. Seago has notably studied such plants as water lilies of the world, Gunnera of the southern hemisphere, grasses of the Yangtze River floodplain and the living fossil Ginkgo.

Although now retired, Dr. Seago maintains his own consulting business, Seago Botanical Consulting, in Minetto, NY. He currently specializes in plant development and structure research, especially wetland plants and angiosperms, the trees and shrubs of Oswego, college biological education and program planning. Furthermore, Dr. Seago provides reviews of college biological science programs and plant structure manuscripts for journals, among other services.

Born in Alton, Ill., Dr. Seago grew up with two loving parents and four younger sisters. Although his mother and father were not college educated, he was taught how to garden during his teenage years, both in his own backyard and alongside his neighbors. Upon pursuing a higher education, Dr. Seago intended to study medicine but instead followed his passion of studying plants.

Prior to embarking upon his professional path, Dr. Seago earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Knox College in 1963. He continued his studies with a Master of Arts in botany from Miami University in 1966. Subsequently, Dr. Seago graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in botany from the University of Illinois in 1969.

A consultant on many books and professional botanical journals since 1978, Dr. Seago has also contributed to numerous articles for professional journals throughout his career. He also served on the editorial board for Environmental and Experimental Botany between 1992 and 2007. Likewise, he was a notable reviewer for the American Journal of Botany, the Canadian Journal of Botany, the International Journal of Plant Science and the Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club. Moreover, Dr. Seago is a longstanding member of the Botanical Society of America, the Torrey Botanical Club, the Nature Conservancy and the Society for Economic Botany.

The recipient of National Science Foundation grants in 1981 and 1992, Dr. Seago has been presented with a Distinguished Fellow Merit Award from the Botanical Society of America in 2004. He additionally accepted a Centennial Award from the Botanist Society of America in 2006 and a President's Award for Scholarly and Creative Activity from SUNY Oswego in 2010. Furthermore, Dr. Seago has been selected for inclusion in the second edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
