Having grown up in a creative family, Ms. Abbott is a glass artisan and freelance photographer who has worked out of her own studio, Linda Abbott Studios, since 1972. She began her career as a fashion designer for Alyssa Little Craft in New York in 1963. While she loved the work, she decided the industry wasn't for her so she went to work for Eastern Airlines and traveled extensively visiting the art she studied in her art history classes in college, while continuing working in her art studio, doing watercolors, pastels and acrylic paintings. In 1972, she co-founded Virgin Islands Diving School in St. Thomas, USVI. Selling her interest in the company in 1976, Ms. Abbott subsequently worked as a guest artist with Creative Glass in Salt Lake City from 1978 to 1981, and worked in her own studio, Linda Abbott Glass Art in Willow Park, Texas from 1981 to 1986. Ultimately, she founded, taught stained glass artwork and did commissioned stained, carved and beveled glass work for Crystal Rainbow Glass Studio in Dania, Florida from 1986 to 1999. Since that time, she returned to her commissioned art studio to do private commissions for residences, businesses and religious organizations worldwide.
In addition to this tenure, Ms. Abbott has excelled as a consultant for various stained glass companies since 1989 and equipment manufacturers since 1994, as well as a popular seminar instructor since 1994, and a guest instructor at miscellaneous studios nationwide since 1994. She was a member of the steering committee for Art Glass America in Tampa, Florida in 1998, Glass Craft Expo in Las Vegas, NV in 1993, and the chair and a seminar coordinator for the International Art Glass Suppliers Association in 1999. As a freelancer, Ms. Abbott worked in the Lancaster, Ca. area from 1966 to 1968, and as a calligrapher for various colleges surrounding the Covina, California area from 1968 to 1971.
Prior to embarking on her professional path, Ms. Abbott pursued a formal education at the Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of New York, earning an Associate of Applied Science in 1963. Years later, she became a certified paralegal at Tarrant County Community College in Ft. Worth, TX. in 1983. Ms. Abbott later studied wildlife photography at the Disney Institute in Lake Buena Vista Fl. in 2000, and multimedia photography production at the Kodak Institute in Rochester, NY, and the New York Institute of Photography in 2001.
When she was young, Ms. Abbott's father had a heart condition and was recommended to take up a hobby like art to relax. He began painting, and would often take her to attend classes with him. She continued her studies at the Queensboro Art Society of Allied Arts and Crafts in Jamaica, NY, studying under world famous impressionist artist, Ludmilla Morosowa, with whom she maintained a loving relationship until Ms. Morosowa's death in 2007. Ms. Abbott's grandmother was also a fashion designer and was the inspiration for Ms. Abbott's pursuit of a career in fashion design. However, her love of glass, starting with her fascination with a small glass window of a sailing schooner in her childhood home's window, grew through her entire childhood. She would sometimes quietly leave school and travel into New York City to sit for hours in the Steuben Glass showroom and then visit St Patrick's Cathedral, Temple Emanuel and other buildings that housed stained glass windows, to study the beautiful glass she would find there. Because of her interest in art and the artwork she produced in school, she was awarded a full scholarship to the school of her choice by the Art Students League.
A prolific writer, Ms. Abbott began writing and illustrating children's books, and has contributed many articles to magazines in her field, including Beautiful Glass Magazine, American Artist Magazine, Stained Glass Quarterly and Glass Craftsman Magazine. She has also authored five books, in international distribution, "That's A Wrap!!!", "That's A Wrap, too!!!", "You've Got Maille!!!", "It's In the Maille!!!" and "First Glass Maille!!!" on the subject of wire wrapping stained glass jewelry and chain maille. She has also co-authored five books with titles such as "Hot and Wired" and "Some Things Fishy" in 1993, "Rainforest" in 1994, "Stargazing" in 1995 and "Image is Everything" in 1996 on the subject of stained glass patterns.
Active in her local community, Ms. Abbott has dedicated her time to many important wildlife and environmental organizations including PETA, the National Resource Defense Council, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, the Gorilla Foundation, Save the Elephant Foundation, Hope for Paws and the South Florida Ferret Club. She has remained aware of the trends in her field from her affiliations with the International Art Glass Suppliers Association, the International Stained Glass Designers Association the Art Glass Guild Artisans, which she founded, and Art Glass America. Outside of her field, Ms. Abbott has also maintained involvement with America Elects, the Educational Consumer Conference and the Taoist Tai Chi Society.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Ms. Abbott received many awards during her childhood and two Best of Show Awards from the California City Art Association in 1978, the Glass Expo in Salt Lake City in 1982 and was included for publication in the International Library for Photography in 2003. Ms. Abbott's glass work has been featured in several magazines and in books relating to fine glass art. Furthermore, she was selected for inclusion in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in America Education, Who's who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, who's Who of American Women and Who's Who in American Art. She is the proud mother of two wonderful sons, David Edward and Adam Michael, and two beautiful grandchildren, Stephanie and Julie. Beyond her primary responsibilities, Ms. Abbott enjoys participating in many hobbies such as reading, gardening, gourmet cooking, photography, tai chi and supporting animal welfare.
