In addition to his primary role, he worked for this esteemed academic institute as a deputy dean from 1990 to 1991, a Sterling professor from 1994 to 2015, a Gordon Bradford Tweedy professor from 1991 to 1994, and a William Nelson Cromwell professor from 1982 to 1991. He previously held a number of positions with the University of Virginia, including a professor from 1972 to 1976, an associate professor from 1969 to 1972, and an assistant professor from 1968 to 1969. Dr. Mashaw began his career as an assistant professor with Tulane University from 1966 to 1968.

Dr. Mashaw initially pursued an education at Tulane University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. He continued his studies with the aforementioned university, earning a Bachelor of Laws in 1964. He subsequently graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1969. Admitted to practice law in the states of Louisiana and Virginia, Dr. Mashaw is a member of the Order of the Coif and Phi Beta Kappa.

Throughout his career, Dr. Mashaw has been celebrated for his exemplary achievements. He has been presented with a number of awards and accolades for his contributions to the fields of law and education. Likewise, Dr. Mashaw has been featured in numerous publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in American Law, and Who's Who in the East.
