A career that began in 1958 as a student trainee at the U.S. Army Chemical Center, he spent four years training before becoming the chief of the test and measurement branch at the U.S. Army Chemical School in Fort McClellan, AL. From there, Mr. Stuempfle became a physicist in 1964 at the Edgewood Arsenal, the U.S. Army's oldest active proving ground located on the Aberdeen Proving Ground, a U.S. Army facility located adjacent to Aberdeen, MD. In 1971, he moved into the role of research physicist within the Chemical Systems Laboratory. He then served in several capacities at the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center, beginning in 1978 as chief of the operational science branch, then to chief of the physics division in 1985, and later as the director of operations research simulation in 1994. The center is notably the United States' principal research and development resource for non-medical chemical and biological defense.

Throughout his career, Mr. Stuempfle has conducted research in aerosol and spray dissemination, characterization on chemical warfare and chemical biological defense technology. Other areas of research have included mathematical modeling and operations research analyses, aerosol transport, deposition and environmental fate, powder technology, homeland defense and force protection for chemical/biological terrorism incidents. In light of his research, Mr. Stuempfle has contributed numerous articles to various professional journals and chapters in technical books. He also co-authored the 2012 book published by Arcadia Press "Images of America: Edgewood" and the 2018 book "The Edgewood Scrapbook."
