Supported by years of professional experience and an exceptional education, Mr. Haines has excelled as a broadcast executive for over five decades. After earning a Bachelor of Arts from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1964, he obtained a Master of Arts from the University of Wyoming. He later graduated with a Master of Science from Troy State University, Troy, AL in 1970 before accepting a certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1976. Mr. Haines began his career as a news director for KORN TV in Mitchell, SD and a station manager with KUWR Radio in Laramie, WY between 1965 and 1967.
Later holding the positions of the general manager for KLME Radio, an instructor of flight relations for the United States Army and the director of university relations with the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University between 1970 and 1981, Mr. Haines excelled as an executive vice president, the chief operating officer, the president and the chief executive officer for Raycom Sports prior to his retirement in 2018. In addition to his primary career responsibilities, he has maintained his involvement in other career-related endeavors, including working as the executive producer of Elvis Graceland from 1987 to 1997, the executive director for the Continental Tire Bowl since 2002 and on the board of directors for the Charlotte Sports Commission in North Carolina. To remain aware of changes in the field, Mr. Haines maintains his affiliation with the National Association of College Athletic Directors, the American College Public Relations Association, the Virginia Press Association, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce.
Additionally, Mr. Haines is a member of Phi Kappa Delta, Pi Delta Epsilon and Omicron Delta Kappa. A testament to his prolific career, he has been celebrated as Reporter of the Year by the United Press International and accepted the Opperman Distinguished Lecturer Award in 1998 from Dakota Wesleyan University and Alumnus of the Year in 2005. Additionally, he was recognized as an Outstanding TV Sports Executive as well as Outstanding Bowl Director by the All-American Football Foundation. He was named the fourth most powerful person in the Athletic Coast Conference in 2009 by the Orlando Sentinel and received the ACC President's Award in 2012. Outside of his professional career, Mr. Haines enjoys sports, photography, television, traveling and reading in his spare time.
