Herbert Nakata, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Upon his retirement, after 34 years of service and 24 years as Chair, the Microbiology Department created the Herbert M. Nakata Microbiology Fund, which is used to award students scholarships.

An accomplished listee, Dr. Nakata celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois in 1952, Dr. Nakata was appointed Director of the Grant Hospital laboratory in Chicago. However, he was drafted into the United States Army in September of that same year. He served for 21 months, including 13 months in Korea as a radar specialist during the Korean War. While in the army, Dr. Nakata decided to pursue a career in academia upon his return to civilian life. He returned to the University of Illinois, where he was awarded a Master of Science degree in 1956 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1959.

Distinguished today with a number of teaching awards, Dr. Nakata joined Washington State University in Pullman as an instructor in 1959. He remained with the university for the entirety of his career, progressing to assistant professor, associate professor and finally full professor of microbiology, until his retirement in 1993. Dr. Nakata served as chair of the department of microbiology from 1968 to 1992 and spent time as an academic administrator for Washington State University as well.

Upon his retirement, after 34 years of service and 24 years as Chair, the Microbiology Department created the Herbert M. Nakata Microbiology Fund, which is used to award students scholarships. After retiring, Dr. Nakata compiled a history entitled "One Hundred Years of Bacteriology/Microbiology at Washington State University (1895-1995)." Copies of the history were donated to various offices and libraries on campus.

Dr. Nakata is not only well-regarded in his industry for his work as an educator, but also for the larger work that he has done as a part of professional organizations. As a member of the American Society for Microbiology, he was tremendously involved with its Northwest branch, active as vice president from 1975 to 1976 and from 1983 to 1984. He also served as president twice and as councilor for one term. Furthermore, he has contributed many articles to professional journals and had the privilege of serving as a visiting professor for Osaka City University in Japan. In addition, Dr. Nakata was actively involved with the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Sigma Xi.
