Now retired, Dr. Brown has garnered more than 35 years of professional experience, having spent nearly his entire career with Indiana University in Bloomington. He joined the university as a lecturer in music in 1962 before progressing to the position of associate professor in 1967 and then full professor in 1976. Acting in the full professor role until he retired as a professor emeritus in 1993, he also served as the chair of musicology from 1972 to 1979 and 1985 to 1993. Earlier in his career, Dr. Brown acted as the head of the piano program at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio from 1956 to 1959.

Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. Brown has contributed articles and reviews to professional journals in his field. Serving as editor for the "Russian Music Studies" series for the Indiana University Press since 1981, he notably worked on "A Shostakovich Casebook" in 2005 and "Sofia Gubaidulina: A Biography" in 2007. Other books that Dr. Brown has edited include "Russian and Soviet Music: Essays for Boris Schwarz," "Slavonic and Western Music: Essays for Gerald Abraham," and "Musorgsky: In Memoriam 1881 to 1981."

Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Brown earned a Bachelor of Music, cum laude, from Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 1951 and a Master of Music from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1956. After spending several years working in the field, he returned to his studies at Florida State University in Tallahassee, where he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in 1967. In order to keep abreast of developments in his field, Dr. Brown has affiliated himself with such organizations as the Society for Ethnomusicology, the Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies, and the American Musicological Society.

For his accomplishments, Dr. Brown has received multiple honors and accolades over the years. The recipient of grants from both the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation, he was also awarded fellowships by the American Council of Learned Societies and the Lilly Endowment. For excellence throughout his career, Dr. Brown has previously been featured in Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in Entertainment.
