Dr. Sudhakar E. Nair was the recipient of the Barnett Award for Excellence in Teaching.

With 45 years of educational experience to his credit, Dr. Nair has worked as a professor at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago since 1991. Prior to this role, he moved up the ranks from assistant to associate professor at the institute between 1977 and 1991. He began his professional career as a research engineer at the University of California San Diego in 1974, remaining in this position for three years. In addition to this tenure, Dr. Nair chaired the faculty council at IIT from 1992 to 1993 and has chaired its university committee on promotion and tenure since 1994. He also served as the institute's associate dean for academic affairs from 2003 to 2012, and has consulted in his field. Over the years, he has conducted much research in the theory of shells, residual stresses in structures, and nonlinear vibrations.
Originally from Kasaragod, India, Dr. Nair pursued formal education at the University of Kerala, earning a Bachelor of Science in mechanics in 1967. He then attended the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, India, where he received a Master of Science in aeronautical engineering in 1969, and immigrated to the United States later that year. He went on to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy in applied mechanics from the University of California San Diego in 1974. Mr. Nair became involved in his profession because there were no jobs in his field when he lived in India. He always liked mathematics and science, and is proud of having taught over 2,000 students.
Civically, Dr. Nair served as treasurer of the El Lago Condominium Association for four years. A prolific writer, he has contributed myriad articles to scientific journals. Additionally, he has authored three textbooks through Cambridge University Press: "Introduction to Continuum Mechanics" in 2009, "Advanced Topics in Applied Mathematics: For Engineering and the Physical Sciences" in 2011, and "Mechanics of Aero-structures" in 2015. Outside of his primary trade, Dr. Nair keeps updated of trends in his field through affiliations with numerous organizations. He has maintained involvement with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Academy of Mechanics, and the American Society for Engineering Education.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Nair was the recipient of the Barnett Award for Excellence in Teaching. Furthermore, he is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Moreover, he was selected for inclusion in the second edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. Today, he resides in Illinois with his loving wife, Celeste.
