Mr. Burns has been the president of Marketing Associates in Piedmont, Orinda, and Carmel, California, for close to 40 years, beginning in 1980. During his tenure in the marketing and advertising industry, he formerly held several executive level positions with the George S. May International Co. in San Francisco; the Latham Foundation in Alameda; Gross, Pera & Rockey Inc. in San Francisco and the Edward S. Kellogg Co. in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Mr. Burns was also an advertising and marketing director for the Philadelphia Reading Corp. in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and an account executive for the Westinghouse Broadcasting Co. in San Francisco, dating back to 1954.

Over the course of his career, Mr. Burns was involved with an international children's television series, which received viewership of 20 million weekly. He has been responsible for creating commercials for many well-known brand items such as Fruit of the Loom. Some of these commercials still play today. Involved with a nationwide system of local sales and marketing for national advertisers, he was also instrumental in creating a mathematical formula for computing and certifying advertising expenditures. He is responsible for the rescue of companion and livestock animals in all national rescue operations by FEMA.

An accomplished author and columnist, Mr. Burns has published several books. Most recently publishing "Tales of Our Times" with the Dorrance Publishing Bookstore in 2019, he notably authored "Live or Die: A Stroke of Good Luck" in 2012 and "Live or Die: Act II," which detail his life and recovery after a stroke. A longtime board of directors' member and the chair of the Stanford University Annual Fund for Athletics at his alma mater since 1961, Mr. Burns also formerly spent five years on the Boy Scouts of America executive committee between 1983 and 1988. Much earlier in his career, he was active with the Piedmont Junior Chamber of Commerce from 1956 to 1958. Mr. Burns maintains professional affiliation with a number of other organizations as well, including the American Management Association, the Council on Foundations, the Stanford Associates, the Medallion Society and the Commonwealth Club of California.

Born in Oakland, California, Mr. Burns later graduated from Piedmont High School in 1948. Earning a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Stanford University in California in 1952, he went on to serve with the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. In light of all his accomplishments, Mr. Burns was honored with an American Honor Medal from the United States government in 1952 and was also cited in the 27th edition of Who's Who in the West.
