Dr. Karen S. Gunn has been a psychologist, owner and principal of Gunn Consulting Group in Los Angeles since 1984.

Dr. Gunn has been a psychologist, owner and principal of Gunn Consulting Group in Los Angeles since 1984. She is also a retired professor of 29 years who taught at Santa Monica College between 1985 and 2014. Throughout her career, she has contributed numerous professional papers in her areas of expertise, including on the topics of substance abuse, mental health, community development and child abuse. She has served as a mentor to psychology majors and has been involved with early career psychologists training programs, educational and teaching excellence community participation and organization executive coaching, among others.

Over the past five years, Dr. Gunn has been involved in the development of educational and outreach materials for a variety of immigrant populations in Los Angeles County. She has been a longtime consultant of organizational management and a trainer in both the public and private sectors since 1984. Dr. Gunn has also been active as a mental health, health care and human services consultant and ethnic minorities services coordinator for the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. Furthermore, she has served as a faculty representative for the International Studies Program in Salzburg, Austria, and a mentor for students and professionals, among other roles. In her local community, Dr. Gunn has been active with such organizations as the Venice Family Clinic, the Santa Monica Bay Human Relations Council and the City of Santa Monica Social Services Commission. She is currently a member of the board of directors for Youth Services Unlimited.

Dr. Gunn is a longstanding member of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Talent Development and the American Association of University Women. Honored with multiple awards over the past four decades, Dr. Gunn recently received a Founder's Award from the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health in 2019, a Certification of Appreciation from the Pan African Support Group at Santa Monica College in 2013, and an Award for Contributions to Education from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in 2006. She has also been cited in close to a dozen editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.

Born in Detroit to Robert Leroy Gunn and Margaret Elizabeth Glenn, Dr. Gunn's father was also a psychologist. Deciding to pursue a similar career when she was just a freshman, she acquired a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Oakland University in 1974 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Community Psychology from the University of Michigan in 1979. She holds several certifications as well, including in Strength Deployment Inventory, Mental Health First Aide and Cultural Competency Skills, among others. To support her undergraduate education, Dr. Gunn was a resident assistant in the dormitory.
