A retired information and research scientist whose career spanned 50+ years, Mr. Thiel concluded his 36 years professional tenure as the president of Information and Image Management Technologies in Alexandra, Virginia, in 1993. He previously lent his expertise as a division manager for Advanced Systems Development in Alexandria where he consulted on computer and office automation for the Office of Secretary of Defense, the U.S. Army's Pentagon Library, the U.S. Navy's Paperless Ship Project, NATO in Mons, Belgium, and other projects. He began his career as a research scientist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Research Service in Columbus, Ohio, and then moved to research administration in St. Paul, Minnesota and Peoria, Illinois, where he developed nearly 50 computer systems and became a nationwide leader in Datapoint systems.

Mr. Thiel is renowned for his applied research in the application of optical disk and a compact disk read-only memory. He has also made significant contributions to multimedia systems for office technical and scientific information management and dissemination. Furthermore, Mr. Thiel has conducted extensive research in the studies of water movement in agricultural soils. An alumnus of the Ohio State University, Mr. Thiel achieved a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in 1956 and 1959, respectively. Prior to earning his degrees, he served as a sergeant first class in the U.S. Army's 24th infantry division, in Korea from 1950 to 1952.

Throughout his career, Mr. Thiel has contributed 117 scientific papers and articles to scholarly journals and other publications and contributed peer-evaluated contributions to the Soil Science Society of America Journal, Agronomy Journal, Transactions American Society Agricultural Engineers, Journal of Agricultural Engineering Research (Br.), International Congress of Soil Science, and other technical outlets. In 1990, Mr. Thiel authored "CD-ROM Mastering for Information and Image Management." And in 1994, authored the chapter "Automated Indexing of Information Stored on Optical Disc Electronic Document Image Management Systems" in the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science, Volume 54, Marcel Decker Incorporated.

Mr. Thiel has been active as the president of Florida's Lake County chapter Korean War Veterans Association and the Lake-Sumter Computer Society. He is a lifetime member of the 24th Infantry Division Association and a member of the American Legion and the Korean War Veterans Association. He notably served as an editor of 24th infantry division association's The Taro Leaf Journal and developed and served as webmaster for 24thida.com.

With respect to Mr. Thiel's field, he is a lifetime member and fellow, technical transfer futures taskforce member and former board of directors member of the Soil and Water Conservation Society. He was a member of the Association for Information and Image Management and co-chairman of the organization's CD-ROM Taskforce. Furthermore, he was a member of the Society for Applied Learning Technology.

In honor of Mr. Thiel's service in the military, he has been the recipient of a Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal with Three Bronze Service Stars, United Nation Service Medal and a National Defense Service Medal, among others. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been featured in the 57th edition of Who's Who in America, the first, second and eighth editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and the 27th and 28th editions of Who's Who in Finance and Industry.
