With more than 15 years of professional experience, Dr. Engelman was an assistant to the chancellor on affirmative action with the University of Wisconsin-Extension in Madison from 1985 to 1989. Prior to obtaining this role, she was director of outreach with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay from 1973 to 1985. Earlier in her career, Dr. Engelman was director of equal opportunity with UW-Green Bay from 1974 to 1979 and a member of the chancellor's administrative staff from 1973 to 1979.
Dr. Engelman began her career as a student at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in 1949. Earning a Master of Arts from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in 1953, she concluded her studies at the University of Wisconsin, obtaining a Master of Science in 1965 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1977. Dr. Engelman was later certified in management for college and university administrators through Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
A respected voice in her areas of interest, Dr. Engelman has been an active leader in her community as well. She is a member of the Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups, the American Society on Aging, PDK International and Phi Kappa Phi. Spending time on the board of trustees for the Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, Dr. Engelman also served on the board of Meriter Retirement Services and on the board of directors of the Madison Campus Ministry.
Throughout her career, Dr. Engelman has been recognized for her contributions. Notably, she is a grantee of the Harry Kramer Memorial Fund, the Wisconsin Humanities Council and the Ford Foundation. In light of all her accomplishments, Dr. Engelman has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who of American Women.
