Accruing 44 years of professional experience, Dr. Fagerburg retired in 2014, previously serving Northeast State Community College in Blountville, TN as an assistant professor from 2000 to 2004 and an associate professor from 2004 to 2005. He began his professional career as a research chemist at the Eastman Kodak Company in Kingsport, TN in 1970, remaining in this position for three years. He then ascended the ranks to the post of a senior research chemist from 1973 to 1979 before joining the company's chemical products division as a development representative from 1978 to 1979. After changing its name to the Eastman Chemical Company, Dr. Fagerburg excelled with the company's Polymer Research Division as a research associate from 1979 to 1997 and a senior research associate from 1997 to 1999.

In addition to this tenure, Dr. Fagerburg participated on the chemistry curriculum advisory board at Northeast State Community College from 1987 to 1990. He also worked as an adjunct professor at the aforementioned college from 1990 to 2000, as well as at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN in 1996. Growing up as a young teenager, Dr. Fagerburg enjoyed making things that would explode, and eventually graduated to constructing rockets, an early experience was what got him interested in the field of chemistry.

Notably, Dr. Fagerburg holds 50 U.S. patents in his field, some of which have lead to commercial products, and has contributed many articles to professional journals, as well as chapters in books. He remains aware of trends in his field and has been a member of the American Chemical Society for over 50 years. He is a past fellow in the American Institute of Chemists and also was very active in the standard setting organization of the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) G3 Weathering Committee. In citing professional influences, he cites Dr. John Stern, who gave him much direction as an undergraduate student along with Dr. A.G. Tharpe and Dr. A.G. Anderson as his graduate research advisors. He also notes that many of his co-workers in his career at Eastman Chemical Company have helped him very much as well.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Fagerburg was honored with the Outstanding Chemistry Student Award by American Institute of Chemists in 1967. Much later, he was recognized as Speaker of the Year for the Northeast Tennessee section of the American Chemical Society in 1993. Additionally, he was selected for inclusion in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. Now in retirement, Dr. Fagerburg resides in Tennessee with his loving wife of 54 years, Maureen Wilson, with whom they have raised six wonderful children, Eric, Carla, Brian, Paul, Kurt, and Luann. He is also a doting grandfather to 21 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
