Robert V. Haynes Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Haynes with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Haynes celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. After accruing more than 50 years in the field, Dr. Haynes retired from his work as professor emeritus with Western Kentucky University in 2010. He first joined the university in 1984 as the vice president of academic affairs and also served as a professor from 1996 until 2009. A dedicated and hardworking professional, he began in education with the University of Houston as a faculty member in the mid-1950s. Over the next three decades, he also worked as a history professor, the acting director of Afro-American Studies, the interim director of libraries, the director of libraries, associate provost and deputy provost. Although his career has been filled with highlights, he is especially proud of getting involved in the civil rights movement. A Mississippi native, Dr. Haynes was asked to teach the first class about African American history at the University of Houston.

From 1950 until 1951, Dr. Haynes served in the United States Air Force before obtaining a Bachelor of Arts from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1952. He went on to earn a Master of Arts from the George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1953 and a Doctor of Philosophy from Rice University in Houston, Texas in 1959. In order to stay abreast of changes in the industry, he maintained professional alignment with the Mississippi Historical Society, the Organization of American Historians, the Southern Historical Association, the Texas Association of College Teachers and the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture. Additionally, Dr. Haynes dedicated himself to his community by way of the Houston Committee on the Humanities, the Presbyterian Church USA and the United Campus Ministry of Greater Houston.

An expert in his field, Dr. Haynes authored many works, including "The Mississippi Territory and the Southwest Frontier, 1795-1817," "The Natchez District and the American Revolution" and "A Night of Violence: The Houston Riot of 1917." He has been awarded for excellence in historical education throughout his career, earning a Carnegie Fellowship in 1952, a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship in 1973, the McLemore Prize in 2010, and the Richard Wright and Natchez Literature Awards in 2015. Industry publications such as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the South and Southwest have also recognized Dr. Haynes for outstanding work.
