Juanita V. Martin-Davis excelled as an elementary school teacher for 40 years.

Now retired as an educator, Ms. Martin-Davis excelled as an elementary school teacher for 40 years. She received a Bachelor of Arts in 1954 and a Bachelor of Music in 1962 from the University of Saint Francis in Joliet, IL as well as a Master of Arts in elementary education in 1979 from Ball State University. During this time, she held the position of an elementary school teacher with Joliet Public Schools District from 1954 to 1965. Subsequently, Ms. Martin-Davis secured the same role with the Kokomo School Corporation in Indiana until her retirement in 1994.

While working in Kokomo, Ms. Martin-Davis also served as an organist for the Holy Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church from 1970 to 1975. An active member of her community, she has contributed to her local church, the Lutheran Church Our Redeemer, as a Hand Bell director and a substitute organist since 1980, in addition to the role as chairman for the city-wide Martin Luther King celebration in Kokomo, from 2006 to 2009. She has maintained a professional relationship with a number of organizations including the American Guild of Organists, the Democratic Women's Club and the Community Women's Guild. Ms. Martin-Davis was further affiliated with Phi Delta Kappa, the Kokomo Arts Commission, the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers, and Alpha Delta Kappa, for which she served as the secretary, the vice president and the president between 1987 and 2000.

An active presence in the field, Ms. Martin-Davis has been a member of the Omicron Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., having served as Episteolus, Hodegus, Anti Basileus, Basileus. She has earned awards as Soror of the Year in 2010 and 2010 and the Sorority Community Service Award. She is affiliated with the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, the Howard County Historical Society and CHMT Retired Teachers.

For her accomplishments in the field, Ms. Martin-Davis is the recipient of several accolades and honors, including, the Citizen of the Year Award from the National Association of Social Workers Region 4, the Professional Service Award from the University of Saint Francis, and the Community Service Award from the National Association for the Advancement of Color People. The highlight of her career was working for the Joliet Public School District, where she was one of two African-American teachers to be hired by the district under contract. Enjoying her retirement, Ms. Martin-Davis currently participates in golfing, line-dancing, reading, rug hooking and knitting in her spare time, as well as lunching with teacher friends.
