Allan D. Mantel was born in Brooklyn, NY on June 27, 1951, the son of Jewish Holocaust Survivors, Bernard (Berek) Mantel and Ruth (Uta) Weichman Mantel. Mr. Mantel attended New York City public schools in Queens, New York, and was the first member of his family to obtain college and graduate degrees.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University in 1973, Mr. Mantel attended Buffalo Law School (SUNY), and he received his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 1976. He was admitted to practice law before the New York State Bar and the United State District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York in 1977.
Mr. Mantel began his legal career as an associate with the then prestigious matrimonial firm of Rosenthal & Herman, PC in New York City that same year, and he became a named partner of the renamed Rosenthal, Herman & Mantel, PC firm, in 1984. He continued in that capacity until his departure in 1994. From 1995 until 1999, Mr. Mantel continued his legal career as a partner, and as the head of the Matrimonial Department with the firm of Hofheimer, Gartlir & Gross LLP in New York City. In 1999 he then became a founding partner of Stein Riso Mantel McDonough, LLP in New York City, a position he held from 1999 to 2019. In 2019, Mr. Mantel's law firm was reorganized and renamed, Mantel McDonough Riso, LLP, where he continues with his legal career. Many of Mr. Mantel's reported cases have established new legal precedent in Matrimonial Law, and have been widely discussed and debated within the Matrimonial Bar.
Following rigorous peer evaluation, and meeting the highest competence and ethical standards, Mr. Mantel was admitted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers in 1987, and thereafter was admitted as a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers. Mr. Mantel was elected and served as the President of the New York Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers from 2007 – 2008.
As further testament to his success, Mr. Mantel, again by peer selection, has been the recipient of the highest, AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell, for more than 30 years; and has been recognized and selected by Best Lawyers of America, Super Lawyers of New York City and Ten Leaders, all since 2008. For his accomplishments in the matrimonial law field, he has been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
Additionally, Mr. Mantel has served as a member of the Dean's Advisory Council of the Buffalo Law School since 2004, and as a Board Trustee for the Brotherhood Synagogue from 2002 to 2014.
