Dr. Martin William Schwarze is a diplomat of the American Osteopathic Board of internal medicine and the subspecialty of cardiovascular disease.

Supported by more than 40 years of practiced experience in medicine and academia, Dr. Schwarze rose through the academic ranks from Instructor of Medicine to Assistant Clinical Professor before becoming a full Clinical Professor of Medicine within the Division of Cardiology at St Louis University Hospital in 1999. He also holds the title Clinical Professor at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine at the A.T. Still University since 1988. He has had the opportunity to teach medical students at both St. Louis University School of Medicine and the New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. Excelling in his role as the past director of Non-invasive Cardiology at Barnes Saint Peters Hospital in the 1980s, he also served for a period of time as Director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation program and ultimately as Chief of Staff at Barnes Jewish Saint Peters Hospital. He also was the Chief of Cardiology at Des Peres Hospital from the early 1980s until 2009.

Alongside his primary care responsibilities, Dr. Schwarze served the Normandy Osteopathic Hospitals as the Treasurer of the Department of Internal Medicine for 2 years, and later became the Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine, the Director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation program and was the Chief of Staff at Barnes St. Peters Hospital. Likewise, he served St. Peters Community Hospital as the Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit in the early 1980s. A contributor to a myriad of articles to professional journals, a paper was recently published on a case report of gabapentin induced cardiomyopathy; he also authored a paper titled "statins in the elderly" in clinical geriatrics in 2004, as well as myocarditis in the Journal of American osteopathic association in 1990. Dr. Schwarze presented "treatment of acute myocarditis with venous suppression therapy" at the American College of Cardiology Scientific Session in 1984. In addition he had a fortunate opportunity to chair a number of National Cardiology meetings throughout the country as well as sharing local programs for over 30 years on topics in the field of Cardiology. Lastly, he has participated in a large number of pharmaceutical research studies on cardiovascular drugs, especially in the field of lipidology.

To prepare for his career, Dr. Schwarze pursued formal education at Saint Louis University, where he received a Bachelor of Science and chemistry 1968. Going on to earn Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic medicine at A.T. Still University in 1973. He was licensed to practice medicine in the state of Missouri the following year. Board certified in Internal Medicine Cardiology, he is a diplomat of the American Osteopathic Board of internal medicine and the subspecialty of cardiovascular disease. Likewise, Dr. Schwarze is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and a master fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Internists (MACOI).

A former member of the board of governors of the Missouri chapter of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Schwarze has maintained affiliation with numerous organizations throughout his career. He is a past present of the St. Louis chapter of the American Heart Association, as well as serving in other capacities during his 30 years on the board. He is also past present, vice president and secretary-treasurer of the St. Louis Cardiac Club. Earlier in his career, he sat on the patient care committee of Saint Peter's Community Hospital and the future planning committee of the Normandy osteopathic hospitals. He is a member of the American osteopathic association, a past member of the St Louis Metropolitan medical society, and a life member of the Missouri association of Osteopathic physicians and surgeons.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Schwarze has received numerous accolades and honors. Named Educator of the Year by the Normandy Osteopathic Hospitals in 1987, he received the Arthur E. Strauss Lifetime Achievement Award and the Hugh D. McCulloch Medical Honoree Award from the American Heart Association in 2003 and 2008, respectively. Listed in Best Doctors in St. Louis since 2008, he was presented with a Super Hero Award from the Barnes-Jewish St. Peters & Progress West Foundation in 2015 and was also named Educator of the Year in 1999, 2000 and 2006. He is currently employed by BJC Medical Group.

His hobbies include horticulture, model trains and antique cars. He has been married for 46 years to Janet Musial Schwarze and has two children, Julie and Brian and two grandchildren, Mason and Lillie.
