Dr. Wilton is a former management consultant who founded her own firm, Wilton Associates, in McLean, Virginia, in 1999. Working with clients for nearly 20 years, she retired in 2016. Her expertise notably included 26 years with the United States government between 1959 and 1998, where she served in a wide variety of roles. Building on a fascination with language and communication, Dr. Wilton's early career as a linguist easily transferred to the field of interpersonal psychology.
Dr. Wilton graduated from Lawrence University (Appleton, Wisconsin) in 1958 and was granted a Fulbright Scholarship to Germany for 1958-1959. She later attended the University of Maryland earning MEd and PhD degrees in 1970 and 1978, respectively. In 2006, she was certified as a clinical hypnotherapist by the National Board for Clinical Hypnotherapists.
A long-standing member of the Personality Assessment System Foundation, Dr Wilton served as it's Secretary between 2004 and 2013. The organization notably exists to further the study of how personality variables interact to influence human behavior, based on the theory of personality developed by the late Dr. John Gittinger. In 2006, Dr. Wilton authored "Taking Charge: A Conversation About Building Life Skills", in which she outlines Gittinger's theory and illustrates how different people act and react to the drivers in their lives. It also provides insights from training and experience in behavioral psychology. Dr. Wilton is currently working on a book of poetry and has had two of her poems published: "Lost Freedom" in 1999 and "Siblings" in 2006.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Dr. Wilton has lived in many places across the USA and the world. Now settled in McLean, she has one son and two stimulating grandsons who live nearby.
