With a professional background in biology that span 55 years, Dr. Adamo spent much of his career at Ocean County College, where he garnered valuable experience in a variety of roles ranging from professorial duties of teaching and research to directing the environmental center. Additionally, he was head of the college's Department of Science from 1981 to 1991. Propelled by an inexhaustible drive to teach students, he aligned with other institutions of higher learning, such as Fairleigh Dickinson University, Jersey City State College and Monmouth University. He also held visiting professorships at Drexel University and Rutgers University. Dr. Adamo further progressed in his career at Georgian Court University teaching in the graduate school from 1990 to 2010 whereupon he retired from higher education. Further, as an exchange scientist he spent a year in Asia, at the University of the Philippines and the International Rice Research Institute His research included pathogenic microbe in the rice patties of Southeast Asia.
Dr. Adamo holds a Bachelor of Arts from New Jersey City University, a Master of Science from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and a PhD from Rutgers University. The focus of his research has involved genetically engineered microorganisms, DNA transfer in the environment, and nanotechnology. As an acclaimed scientist and educator, he achieved recognition as a Fulbright-Hays fellow, and was a recipient of the Hammond Science Award.
To remain current with scientific developments, Dr. Adamo took post graduate courses at: Temple U.; Georgetown U.; Oak Ridge Nuclear Lab.; Rensselear Poly. Tech.; Wakesman Inst.; Berkeley; Virginia Tech.; Harvard U.; Cold Spring Harbor; New York Inst. Tech.; and Princeton. Further, Dr. Adamo maintains membership with organizations including the American Society of Microbiology, the American Chemical Society, the Society of Nematology and the honor societies of Iota Mu Pi, Phi Sigma and Sigma Xi.
In high school, Dr. Adamo was a Civil Air Patrol Cadet and, on his own, completed all the requirements for the Private Pilot certificate. Dr. Adamo served in the U.S. Air Force 1955 to 1959. Currently, he is a lieutenant colonel, commander and Aerospace Education Officer in the Civil Air Patrol. Dr. Adamo is the proud father of four children and 13 grandchildren.
