Mr. Tanner is a retired professional roof consultant and president of Tanner Roof Consultants, of Horseheads, New York and Dauphin, Pennsylvania. For 19 years he was a certified asbestos building inspector with the New York State Department of Health in Albany, New York. His expertise in the field includes being manager of engineering services for Carlisle Syntec Systems, Inc. in Carlisle, Pennsylvania; being technical director at C.F. Evans Roofing & Sheetmetal in Elmira, New York; and serving as roofing director at Haskell, Conner, Frost & Foor Architects in Elmira, New York.
Following U.S. Navy active duty, Mr. Tanner was an industrial education teacher at the Carlisle Area School District. the South Middleton School District, and the Cumberland Valley School District, all in south central Pennsylvania. He is a certified teacher in Pennsylvania and New York State. Mr. Tanner published an instructional book titled Owner's Manual of Roof Inspection, Maintenance and Repair, released in 1992.
Mr. Tanner has been an active church member, Sunday School teacher and church board member for many decades. He is an active member of several business and industry-related organizations as well, such as the Construction Specifications Institute and the Harrisburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, and several historical organizations, including the National Warplane Museum and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Further, Mr. Tanner maintains membership in the American Legion due to his concurrent military career.
An alumnus of California University of Pennsylvania, Mr. Tanner holds a Bachelor of Science in education since 1967. He was the recipient of a full graduate school fellowship through the United States Department of Education, where he earned his Master of Science degree in 1968 at the State University of New York (SUNY), Oswego. In 1969 he was named Distinguished Naval Graduate at his commissioning; and in 1989 he was named Distinguished Graduate at the U.S. Air Force officer intelligence school at Goodfellow Air Force Base, San Angelo, Texas. In 1995 he graduated from the United States Air Force Air Command and Staff College. He is a certified U.S. Naval Aviator, a P-3 "Orion" pilot and air intelligence officer with the rank of lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. As a U.S. Air Force senior pilot (C-130) and wing intelligence officer, he IS a veteran of the Persian Gulf War, Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, with the rank of major. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1997. Mr. Tanner is also an FAA certified commercial, instrument and multi-engine pilot.
