With more than 40 years of experience in metallurgical engineering research, Dr. Gilby has become an authority in his industry. His career began as a research engineer in steelmaking at Youngstown Steel Company in 1966. Subsequently, Dr. Gilby became a research engineer, a senior research engineer, a research associate, and a manager of steelmaking research at Armco Steel Company. Recently at Armco, he worked as the director of process research, a managing director, the vice president of research, and the assistant to the president, the latter role being held since 1996. He also served as a chairman of the External Advisory Commission of the Materials Science and Engineering Department at the Ohio State University and an adjunct faculty member at the University of Cincinnati.
Prior to becoming an esteemed engineer, Dr. Gilby pursued higher education with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Cincinnati in 1962 and a Doctor of Philosophy in metallurgical engineering from the Ohio State University in 1966. He was mentored by Dr. Charles Taylor, his former supervisor at Armco. Dr. Gilby learned the art of steelmaking from him and became his successor after he retired. Notably, Dr. Gilby has done in-depth research on steelmaking and continuous casting process development.
Outside of his professional responsibilities, Dr. Gilby remains aware of the advancements and changes in his industry through relevant organizations. He is a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute, the ASM International and the Steel Experts Network. In his free time, Dr. Gilby enjoys golfing. He and his wife, Betty, have three children: Joan, Karen and David. The proudest moment of Dr. Gilby's career was becoming the director of process research at Armco. In recognition of his many achievements in the field, Dr. Gilby has been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the Midwest.
