Mr. Ashton is a retired attorney who served as partner and chair of Ashton, Wisener and Munkacsy, PC, in Lawton, OK, from 1995 to 2010. Prior service as an active member of the bar includes: partner in the law firm of Ashton, Ashton, Wisener and Munkacsy, P.C., in Lawton, OK from 1975 to 1995; partner in the law firm of Ashton, Ashton and Wisener, Lawton, OK from 1973 to 1975; partner in the law firm of Ashton and Ashton of Lawton, OK from 1972 to 1973. Ashton served as a Captain and Judge Advocate in the U.S. Air Force at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, DC, from 1969 to 1972, and was an associate attorney for Rhoads, Ashton, Johnson & Schacher in Lawton, OK from April to May in 1969.

Ashton was a strong opponent of legislative attempts to restrict a jury's ability to decide the form of justice required by litigated evidence. He has served on the board of directors for the Oklahoma Attorneys Mutual Insurance Company (1980-2014, Chair 1985-1987) and Oklahoma Science and Technology Research and Development Board (2006-2011), on the board of Oklahoma Basic Health Benefits (1990-1992 Chair 1990-1992) and as a member of the Oklahoma Human Rights Commission (2002-2006). Ashton was active on several committees of the Oklahoma Bar Association (OBA) and was an associate editor of the OBA Journal (1983-1987) and Editor (1988-1989). He is a past president (1978 and 1987), board of directors member and education chair of the Oklahoma Trial Lawyers Association now the Oklahoma Association for Justice, past president of the Southwest Oklahoma Legal Institute, and a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He has served in numerous capacities with the Oklahoma Bar Professional Liability Company and is a longtime member of American Bar Association and the American Trial Lawyers Association now the American Association for Justice, among others. Ashton was elected by his peer attorneys to serve as a Lawyer Member of the Oklahoma Judicial Nominating Committee (1984-1990, Chair 1986-1988).

On a local level, Mr. Ashton has served as co-chair of the Comanche County Democratic Party, as a district chair to the Democratic Party for Oklahoma's Fourth Congressional District. He was a delegate to many Democratic Party State Conventions and was a four time National Delegate from Oklahoma to the Democratic Party National Convention (1984, 2000, 2004 and 2016). Mr. Ashton served on the Board of Goodwill Industries of Southwest Oklahoma and North Texas, Inc. (Secretary 1999-2001; Vice Chair 2001; Chair 2002), Family Promise of Lawton, Inc. (Chair 2009-2011); and member of Oklahoma AARP State Legislative Committee (1995-1998). He was also a chancellor (attorney) for the Oklahoma Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church for many years between 2000 and 2010. He is currently a Commissioner on the Lawton Public Housing Authority since 2011, and is a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Lawton since 1974.

Mr. Ashton has written extensively. He was the 1976 co-editor of the Oklahoma Bar Association desk manual and editor-in-chief of the Oklahoma Trial Lawyers Association's "The Advocate", a monthly journal, between 1997 and 2006. He was also on the committee to write jury instructions for all civil cases tried before all Oklahoma juries and was a member of the select committee appointed to write rules and prepare forms for Oklahoma pre-trial conferences.

The recipient of several accolades throughout his career, Mr. Ashton more recently received an Oklahoma Governor's Commendation for Service to State in 2006. He also received a Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Service Award from the Cameron Campus Ministry in 1996, Dr. J.L. Davenport Special Community Achievement Award from Saint John's Baptist Church in Lawton in 1996, Francis Asbury Award for Fostering United Methodist Ministries in Higher Education in 1995, and Outstanding Service Award from the Oklahoma Bar Professional Liability Insurance Company in 1993. He has notably been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Law.

Mr. Ashton received a Bachelor of Business Administration and Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Oklahoma in 1966 and 1969, respectively. He was soon after admitted to the Oklahoma Bar Association, the Western District of the U.S. District Court, the10th Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals, the D.C. Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of the United States. Married to Linda Diane Ashton since 1971, Mr. Ashton has three daughters and four grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys fly-fishing, photography and participating in non-profit work focused on poverty, the lack of affordable housing and ministry to college students.
