O'Mara, MD, MBA with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. O'Mara celebrates over 45 years of practice experience in medicine and academia and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. In 2011 he completed a Master of Business Administration degree at the University of Texas at Dallas. In 2013 Dr. O'Mara started at UMMC as Professor of Surgery. He was first in the role of Special Advisor to the Vice Chancellor, and soon thereafter he was appointed to his current position of Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs.

In addition to his practice of surgery, Dr. O'Mara has contributed over 60 papers, articles, and chapters published in esteemed professional journals and medical textbooks. At UMMC, he has been in a leadership role for numerous important institutional initiatives. He has also served as president of the Southern Surgeons Club, the Callender Society, the Mississippi Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, and the Tulane Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Distinguished Fellow of the Society for Vascular Surgery.

Over the course of his career, Dr. O'Mara has been honored and recognized for his work in numerous ways. He was awarded the Taylor Medal in Biology at the University of Mississippi, and he received the Arthur B. Priest Award in 1969 as the outstanding member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity in the U.S. and Canada. While at Tulane Medical School he garnered the Roche Award, the Dr. Walter G. Unglaub Memorial Award, the Oscar Creech Award, and the Isadore Dyer Memorial Prize, representing outstanding academic and clinical performance at Tulane. He was a four-time winner of the Richard M. Nowell Award from the Callender Society (1990, 1992, 1996, 2000). He was the inaugural recipient of the Patient First Award in 2008 at MBMC.
