Ralph Bennett received Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Fine Arts degrees in Architecture from Princeton University. Prof. Bennett was the founding principal of Bennett Frank McCarthy Architects in Silver Spring, Maryland in 1989. He retired his ownership in 2019. He began his career in architecture with Kallmann and McKinnell Architects in Boston and Sert, Jackson and Associates in Cambridge from 1966 to 1972. He was a founding principal of massdesign architects and planners in Cambridge in 1972, and was principal of Ralph Bennett Architect from 1986 to 1989.

Prof. Bennett was Instructor and Assistant Professor of Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design from 1968 to 1976. He served as Instructor, Associate Professor and Professor of Architecture at the University of Maryland School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation from 1976 to 2008. During his tenure, he served as Acting Dean for one year and Chair of the College Park Campus Senate for one year. He received the President's Medal in 2003. He received a Distinguished Professor award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture in 1998. He was elected Professor Emeritus in 2009.

He has engaged in numerous civic activities, serving as Co-Chair of the Affordable Housing Conference on Montgomery County and Board President of Purple Line NOW, He was President of the Four Corners Civic Association from 1980 to 1984; he was Board member of the Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County from 1992 to 2005, Chair from 1998 to 2001. He served in the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant, Artillery, from 1962 to 1964.

Mr. Bennett is a registered architect in Maryland, Massachusetts, Virginia and Delaware. His projects as Principal architect include the North End Skating Rink in Boston, Kirkwood House and the Louis W. Foxwell Community in Baltimore, Mary's House and Raphael Houses in Rockville, Maryland and Massanutten Manor in Strasburg, Virginia. Mr. Bennett wrote a column on architecture for Warfield's Magazine in Baltimore from 1987 to 1991. He wrote 10 pages on Housing Design for Architectural Graphic Standards in 2012. He became a LEED Accredited Professional of the U.S. Green Building Council in 2009.

Mr. Bennett has been a member of the Potomac Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects since 1988; he was Chapter President in 1997. He received the Chapter's Paul Kea Medal for Leadership in 2002. He was elected Fellow of the Institute in 2015. He was listed in the 22d Edition of Who's Who in the East.
