A professor emeritus in the department of history at Michigan State University, Dr. Laurence officially retired in 2007 after 41 years of service as a faculty member. He began his career at Michigan State University as an instructor in the department of humanities in 1966, excelling in the department in a number of academic positions until 1989. Dr. Laurence later worked for the university as a professor in the history department from 1989 to 2007.

Dr. Laurence also notably served Michigan State University as assistant and associate chairman of the humanities department between 1985 and 1989. Prior to these appointments, he served as a teaching assistant in the humanities department at his graduate alma mater, Stanford University. Over the years, Dr. Laurence has authored several books and journals, including "Michigan Academician" in 1980, "Peace and Change" in 1989, "Austrian History Yearbook" in 1992, "Biographical Dictionary of Internationalists" in 1983 and Biographical Dictionary of Modern Peace Leaders" in 1985. Likewise, he authored "Doves and Diplomats: Foreign offices and Peace Movements" in 1978 and "Focus on Vienna 1900: Change and Continuity in Literature, Music, Art, and Intellectual History in 1982.

Initially completing pre-med coursework, Dr. Laurence thereafter changed majors at the University of Tennessee, receiving his bachelor's degree in liberal arts and history in 1959. He continued his studies with postgraduate coursework in German at Middlebury College later that same year and in Austrian history and culture at the University of Vienna. He concluded his studies in history and humanaties at Stanford University, earning a Master's degree in 1962 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1968. A longtime council member of the Society for the Study of Internationalism, Dr. Laurence is notably affiliated with the American Historical Association, the Michigan Academy of Science and the German Studies Association, among other scholarly organizations.

A Fulbright scholar at the University of Vienna from 1959 to 1960, Dr. Laurence was also recognized as a Woodrow Wilson fellow and a fellow of Stanford University. He later received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, in 1979 and 1990, as well as dissertation fellowships from Stanford University in the department of history and from the Austrian Government. Likewise, Dr. Laurence has been cited in the 21st and 26th editions of Who's Who in the Midwest.

Dr. Laurence was married to Geutraud Fuehrer from 1961 until her death in 2002. They have three children: Daniel Robert, Sonya Lauren Green and Alfred James. In 2005, he married Patricia Joan Wolthuis. He has six grandchildren, two step-children and three step-grandchildren.
