Dr. Heath is a veterinarian and veterinarian-anatomist with more than 30 years of distinction. He began his career by earning a Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania in 1957. In college, he had the opportunity to take a year off and work on a farm, gaining his first professional experience working with livestock. Inspired by his father and brother, who both attended medical school, his work on the farm led him to pursue veterinary medicine. He completed a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 1962 and a Master of Science from Purdue University in Indiana in 1964. Dr. Heath returned to the University of Pennsylvania to conclude his studies, obtaining his Doctor of Philosophy in 1969.
An instructor at Purdue University from 1962 to 1964, Dr. Heath moved to Nigeria to lecture at the University of Ibadan from 1964 to 1966. From 1966 to 1974, he served as an associate professor at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, before returning to the University of Ibadan, where he progressed from senior lecturer to reader between 1974 and 1978. Joining the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as an associate professor of veterinary medicine in 1978, he rose to full professor by 1986. Dr. Heath later served as an adjunct professor with the university from 1987 to 1998.
Dr. Heath went into private practice in 1987, working out of Home Veterinary Care until his retirement 1998. Providing in-home veterinary care in and around Lynchburg, he greatly enjoyed getting to do house calls as it exposed him to a wider variety of people and animals than he would have seen in a clinic. Also new to the area at the time he began his practice, he was glad for the opportunity to learn about the culture of the area. Notably, Dr. Heath is the author of "Anatomy and Physiology of Tropical Livestock," which was published in 1985, and a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
