Gilles R. G. Monif, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

In collaboration with the Veterinary Research Institute in the Czech Republic, Dr. Gilles R. G. Monif worked out how MAP caused Crohn's disease and delineated steps for its cure and prevention.

Born in New York City, Dr. Monif was deemed mentally challenged before he was discovered to be dyslexic. Attending Swarthmore College, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1957 and a Doctor of Medicine with honors from Boston University in 1961. He did an internship and first year residency on medicine on the Columbia Service at Bellevue Hospital. Between 1963 and 1965, he was a Research Associate at the National Institute of Health where he authored 11 publications on congenital rubella and its pathogenesis. Between 1965 and 1968, He completed a second residency in anatomical pathology at New York University School of Medicine. In 1968, he became an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, and, in 1970, an associate professor at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. While at the University of Florida, Dr. Monif co-founded the subspecialty of infectious disease for the discipline. Dr. Monif served as special interest consultant to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1974-1984. He wrote and edited the standard texts on infectious diseases that affect women and their unborn babies. Infectious Disease in Obstetrics and Gynecology which is currently in its sixth edition won the medical Writers Award for best multi-author text as well as a small book on infectious diseases for resident education. Based on Dr. Monif's research the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention separate treatment of women with acute gonococcal infection from that prescribed for men resulting in a significant decrease in ectopic pregnancies and tube ovarian abscesses. In 1985, Dr. Monif became a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Creighton University School of Medicine to actively assume the presidency of Infectious Diseases Incorporated (IDI). While at Creighton University, Dr. Monif received the 2000 Joyce Mae Harrison Award for outstanding leadership and improving racial/ethnic minority health services.

In 2001 Infectious Diseases Incorporated and the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine entered into a strategic arrangement to conduct research on diseases caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) which was the cause of Johne's disease in domestic animals and possibly Crohn's disease. Between 2001 and 2019, Dr. Monif received four U.S. patents dealing with MAP diagnostics and herd management schema. In collaboration with the Veterinary Research Institute in the Czech Republic, Dr. Monif worked out how MAP caused Crohn's disease and delineated steps for its cure and prevention.

In the field of medicine, Dr. Monif has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals plus a larger number in non peer-reviewed publications as well as seven books. In veterinary-related medicine, he has published 12 papers in peer reviewed journals and two books on Crohn's disease.
