Dr. Jeffrey E. Burkart is an emeritus professor of educational media and communications at Concordia University - St. Paul, MN.

Supported by 50 years of practiced experience in academia, Dr. Burkart is an emeritus professor of educational media and communications at Concordia University - St. Paul, MN. Serving as a professor and director of audiovisual services from 1977 to 1997, he was associate dean of the College of Vocation and Ministry and coordinator of Lutheran Teacher Education from 2002 to 2009, and a media consultant since 1997. He also spent time as the director of drama and ministry in 1999. Prior to his tenure at Concordia University, he was a teacher at several schools, including St. John's Lutheran School, Seward, NE, Lutheran High School North, St. Louis, MO, and Wyneken Memorial Lutheran School, Decatur, IN. Likewise, Dr. Burkart was also an instructor at Martin Luther High School, Greendale, WI, a residence counselor at Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, IL, and an organist, choral director and youth director at St. John's Lutheran Church, Decatur, IN, where he began his career in 1969.

A certified elementary and secondary school teacher in the states of Indiana, Missouri, Wisconsin and Nebraska, Dr. Burkart has also been a consultant for the Lutheran Church and Synod in St. Louis, as well as an educational consultant for the Saint Paul Public Schools and the Elk River, Minnesota, Public School District. He was additionally the area administrator for the Foreign Study League the American Institute of Foreign Study, as well as an editor-at-large and Christian Education Specialist at the Concordia Publishing House, St. Louis, MO. Civically involved as well, Dr. Burkart has served for the past 42 years as full and part-time organist King of Kings Lutheran Church, Roseville, MN. He currently serves as organist at South Shore Trinity Lutheran Church, White Bear Lake, MN.

To prepare for his career, Dr. Burkart pursued formal education at Concordia University Chicago, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1971. Attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln soon thereafter, he received a Master of Arts in 1977. In 1988, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Minnesota. Demonstrating versatility in his profession, he also authored a number of adult and children's books, including: "The Sonday School Book," "The Hidden Prince," "Sure Can Use A Little Good News: 12 Gospel Plays in Rhyme," "Down through the Roof," "A Surprise in Disguise," "Limericks and other Poems," "Fifteen Cautionary Fables," and the Christian musicals, "Man Overboard: An Old Testament Rhyme based on the Book of Jonah," and "Don't Get Burned: A Musical based on Daniel 3 – The Three Men in the Fiery Furnace." He is a contributor to "Creative Worship for the Lutheran Parish," and has over 200 publications to his credit. Dr. Burkart is a composer of contemporary church music and author of articles on children's literature, early childhood education, drama and music. For the past four years, he has written the theme hymns for the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synods National Luther Schools Week celebrations. In 2018 he wrote 125th anniversary hymn for Concordia University, St. Paul, MN in 2018.

To remain current with industry developments, Dr. Burkart maintains affiliation with the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Lutheran Education Association, the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians and Phi Delta Kappa International. As a testament to his success and longevity in the industry, he has received numerous accolades and honors. The recipient of honorary Doctor of Letters degrees from Concordia University-Chicago and Concordia University – St. Paul, MN, he was named to Outstanding Young Men of America in 1980, presented with an Alumnus of the Year Award from Luther High School North in 2004, and the Christus Magister (Teacher of Christ) Award from the Lutheran Education Association in 2012. On April 16, 2013, Dr. Burkart was the honored speaker at the 12th Annual Poehler Lecture (an event designed to explore how Concordia faculty connect their Christian faith with their academic discipline). The title of his presentation was The Persistence of Vision: Perspectives on Faith and Learning. He also served as Senator-At-Large to the Faculty Senate, Chairman of the Academic Events Committee, and served as Faculty Marshall. Notably, Dr. Burkart was selected for inclusion in a plethora of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Media and Communication and Who's Who in the Midwest.

Married to his wife, Martha Louise Gaertner, since 1972, Dr. Burkart is the proud father of three sons: Jonathan, David and Andrew. He is also the grandfather to four grandchildren: Owen, Ryan, Malerie and Tyeson. A native of Chicago, he currently resides in Roseville, Minnesota, and enjoys music, photography, reading, astronomy and travel in his spare time.
