Dr. Gast grew up in a deeply religious Presbyterian family with a father who was as committed to his Christian faith as he was involved in business. Greatly inspired by his father, he decided to pursue a career in theology and nonprofit management, first earning a Bachelor of Arts from Wheaton College in Illinois in 1950, followed by a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey in 1953. He was officially ordained as a minister of the Presbyterian faith in 1953. Prior to beginning his education, Dr. Gast served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1946.
Concluding his education at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, Dr. Gast obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in historical theology in 1956. Going on to work as a dean and professor of theology at the Conwell School of Theology in Philadelphia from 1960 to 1967, he became a senior minister at the First Presbyterian Church of Germantown in Philadelphia in 1967 and remained in this role until 1981. In 1981, he changed his focus to business administration, attaining the positions of president and chief executive officer of the Presbyterian Foundation in New York City. Following this opportunity, he served as the chair and chief executive officer of the foundation from 1986 to 1990. From 1990 to 1997, Dr. Gast excelled as an executive of Philadelphia Presbyterian Homes.
Throughout his career, Dr. Gast has served on numerous professional boards, including for the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in 1980, and as a trustee of the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1979.
Furthermore, he holds a number of honorary degrees, including a Doctor of Humane Letters from the Davis & Elkins College in West Virginia since 1981, a Doctor of Divinity from Ursinus College in Pennsylvania since 1982, and a Doctor of Laws from Bloomfield College in New Jersey since 1987.
