Dr. Lawrence Friedman Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Accruing more than 40 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Friedman is currently the chair of the department of medicine at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Massachusetts, where he also has a consulting practice focused on liver disease. In addition, he serves as the assistant chief of medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Friedman began his career at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1978, where he completed an internship in internal medicine before becoming a resident the following year.

Following those positions, Dr. Friedman pursued a clinical and research fellowship in gastroenterology at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital before accepting the position of an associate professor at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He also excelled at Jefferson Medical College as the vice chairman of the department of medicine and housestaff training program director.

Prior to embarking on his career path, Dr. Friedman attended Princeton University from 1971 to 1973 before receiving his Bachelor of Arts at Johns Hopkins University in 1975. He subsequently obtained a Doctor of Medicine from the same university in 1978 through the school of medicine's combined BA/MD program. Dr. Friedman remained at Johns Hopkins University for his residency training. He is a diplomate in internal medicine and gastroenterology in the American Board of Internal Medicine.

An established authority in his field, Dr. Friedman is the author of over 400 papers and chapters on all aspects of gastroenterology. These titles include "Jejunal diverticulosis with perforation as a complication of Fabry's disease," "Evaluation of blood donors with elevated serum alanine aminotransferase levels," and "5-Aminosalicylic acid enemas in refractory ulcerative colitis." He has also found success as an editor for numerous book titles, including the "Handbook of Liver Disease" and the "Essentials of Gastroenterology," published by Oxford. He has been vo-editor of Sleisenger and Fordtran's Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease, published by Elsevier. In a publication for Gastroenterology the Journal, Dr. Friedman shares the lessons he learned while becoming a clinician-educator with anyone interested in academic medicine, one of the most important being to take risks.

Outside of his immediate professional responsibilities, Dr. Friedman has contributed on the board of directors for the American Board of Internal Medicine and as the chairman of the Gastroenterology Leadership Council Training Committee. A consultant for the Antimicrobial Drugs Advisory Committee, he was presented with a Crystal Award from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy for his service as an editor for the ASGE News in 2018. Four years prior, he received a Newton-Wellesley Hospital Faculty Teaching Award from the Massachusetts General Hospital Medical House Staff. Dr. Friedman was the Inaugural Jerome A. Marks Lecturer for the American College of Gastroenterology, and received the Distinguished Educator Award from the American Gastroenterological Association, the Alfred Kranes Award from Massachusetts Hospital, and the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award from Jefferson Medical College.
