Demetra Dalapas Tims Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    TUCSON, AZ, July 16, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Demetra Dalapas Tims with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Ms. Tims celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Originally from Saco, Maine, Demetra, is the youngest of four girls, born to parents who came from Greece through Ellis Island. In her high school years at Thornton Academy, she was the Debate Club president, Spanish Club secretary, Cheerleader Captain, Spelling Champion, wrote the Class Ode, played cello in the orchestra, sang in Glee Club, acted in plays, and was active in sports. She is fluent in Greek, her second language.

At Emerson College in Boston, Demetra earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Therapy (1957). She sang in the college choir, performed recitals in Advanced Oral Interpretation and Platform Art. She served as class secretary. She was vice-president of Zeta Phi Eta, a Speech Arts Fraternity for Women, and was the delegate to their national convention in South Dakota. She was selected Emerson College May Queen, 1956. As a result, she was invited to be in the Miss Maine Finals for the Miss America Pageant (1956).

After college graduation, Demetra married Robert E. Tims at the U.S. Naval Academy. They were married for 59 years until his passing in 2016. Their three children, Stanley, Peter, and Diana are all college graduates and successful in their careers.

In her professional career, Ms. Tims was a classroom teacher at Odenton Elementary School in Maryland, and a speech therapist in Brevard County Schools in Florida (1969-1976.) After moving to Tucson, Arizona, she worked as a speech pathologist in Tucson Unified School District, at all grade levels (K-12). After earning a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling and Guidance in 1988, she was a school counselor until she retired in 1998. As counselor, Ms. Tims taught parenting classes in an elementary school and at the Tucson Psychiatric institute.

As a counselor Ms. Tims was an active member of various professional counseling organizations, including the American Counseling Association, American School Counselors Association, North American Society of Adlerian Psychology, Adlerian Society of Arizona, and Arizona School Counselors Association. In 1990, she attended ICASSI (International Conference for Adlerian Summer Schools and Institute) at Hamilton College, NY, and in 1991 at the University of Limerick, Ireland.

Meanwhile, pursuing her interest in handwriting analysis Ms. Tims became a Certified Graphoanalyst (1978) and a Master Certified Graphoanalyst (1986) through the International Graphoanalysis Society (IGAS). She served as president of the Arizona Chapter of IGAS for two years (1984, 1985), after a year as vice-president (1983). She attended the International Congress of IGAS in Chicago as the Arizona delegate for four years (1983, 1984, 1985, 1986).

Demetra taught classes in Handwriting Analysis, including a class in the Amphi Community Schools (1985, 1989). A Harlequin Romance novelist took her class to use the topic in her writing, then dedicated the book to Mrs. Tims in 1987. Ms. Tims was consulted on a reference book, Handwriting Analyst's Handbook (1986). She used her handwriting analysis skills for personal reports, compatibility, personnel selection, business, or other services as needed, including school vandalism.

Demetra and her husband, Bob, were advanced-level dancers in choreographed ballroom dancing, traveling to about 12 major dance events annually. They were General Chairmen of the Southern Arizona Square and Round Dance Festival (1985) and Round Dance Chairmen (1989, 1990, 1991.) As members of the International Choreographed Ballroom Dance Association (ICBDA) they were Syllabus Chairmen (2002, 2007) and on the Board of Directors of ICBDA for a three-year term (2006-2009).

Ms. Tims has been singing in Sweet Adelines International since 1964. She has sung and competed in five Sweet Adelines choruses and eight registered quartets in both Florida and Arizona, winning many chorus medals and one Novice Quartet trophy. She is currently singing in Tucson Desert Harmony Chorus. She has sung in various concerts, and is a former choir member at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Tucson.

Ms. Tims is an elected Precinct Committeeman in her Legislative District in Pima County Republican Party, Arizona (2008-201- ) and was Arizona State Committeeman (2017-2018).

In addition to ballroom dancing, Ms. Tims enjoyed other types of dancing, including advanced square dancing, advanced round dancing, Greek dancing, country swing, and line dancing.
