With four decades of accrued experience, Dr. Burkholder most recently served as a distinguished professor of music at Indiana University Bloomington between 2006 and 2019. A devoted employee of Indiana University Bloomington for 31 years, Dr. Burkholder began his tenure with the institution as associate professor of music in 1988. He further progressed to full professor, associate dean of faculties, and chair of the Department of Musicology until 2013. Earlier in his career, he served the University of Wisconsin-Madison as assistant professor of music from 1982 to 1988.

Dr. Burkholder earned a Bachelor of Arts from Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana in 1975 and then attended the University of Chicago, where he secured a Master of Arts in 1980 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1983.

Dr. Burkholder is best known as the lead author of "A History of Western Music" and "Norton Anthology of Western Music," the leading music history textbooks in the English language. He is also the author of "Charles Ives: The Ideas Behind the Music," "All Made of Tunes: Charles Ives and the Uses of Musical Borrowing," and more than fifty articles in music journals, encyclopedias, and essay collections on subjects ranging from modernism to music history pedagogy. His published writings have been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Italian, German, and Arabic.

For his accomplishments in the field, Mr. Burkholder was the recipient of the Alfred Einstein Award and Honorary Membership from the American Musicological Society, two Irving Lowens Awards from the Society for American Music, two Deems Taylor Awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, and a Faculty Award from Indiana University Bloomington, among others. He has served as president of the American Musicological Society, and the Charles Ives Society. Outside of work, he enjoys writing, weight lifting, watching movies, studying family history, and participating in Bloomington Friends (Quaker) Meeting.
