With more than 35 years of professional experience, Dr. Wheeler was a professor at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania from 1965 to 1997, also serving as assistant chair of biology and health services from 1970 to 1973. Prior to obtaining these positions, he was an instructor of biology with Delta College from 1961 to 1965, where he was also chair of biology from 1963 to 1965. In addition to his primary roles, Dr. Wheeler is a former visiting associate with the California Institute of Technology.

Dr. Wheeler began his career as a student at Michigan State University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1953. He continued his studies with the school, completing a Master of Science in 1956. He subsequently joined Cornell University, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in 1961. A leading expert in his areas of interest, Dr. Wheeler has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties, the Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association, the Pennsylvania State Education Association, and Sigma Xi. He has also been active with the Erie Philharmonic Chorus and the Edinboro University Singers.

Throughout his career, Dr. Wheeler has been recognized for his contributions, including having been named a Johns Hopkins University fellow. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Dictionary of International Biography.
