Stephen Robert Cohen has enjoyed a prolific career, with achievements in both the professional and civic world. In 1990, he served as the founder and owner of Cosons, following a successful tenure at the Stewart Petroleum Corporation as a senior sales representative in Washington, D.C. Earlier in his career, Mr. Cohen thrived as the sales manager at Amerata-Hess, located in Landover, Maryland, from 1962 to 1979, and as a secretary at a Washington, D.C., fuel company from 1949 to 1962.

Among Mr. Cohen's greatest accomplishments was founding the Jewish Foundation for Group Homes in 1982. He also lent his leadership expertise to the nonprofit as its second president. The organization presently supports more than 200 individuals in over 80 sites throughout the Washington D.C. metropolitan area who suffer from intellectual disabilities, mobility impairments, deafness or hearing loss, visual deficiencies, chronic mental illness, communication disorders or other developmental disabilities. The headquarters, located in Rockville, Maryland, is currently located in a building named after Cohen and his wife and he is further commemorated by the S. Robert Cohen Award, presented annually at the organization's gala.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Mr. Cohen has volunteered his time and efforts to numerous civic organizations. In 1982, he served on the board of directors of the Jewish Social Service Agency, an organization providing hospice care, senior services, and counseling throughout Montgomery County, Maryland, and as the president of the Jewish Foundation for Group Homes from 1982 to 1984. Mr. Cohen has been further affiliated with the Bender JCC of Greater Washington from 1980 to 1982 and the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington. He also served as a co-honoree of the housing opportunities commission of Montgomery County, Maryland, in 1986.

Mr. Cohen has been recognized on numerous occasion for his many achievements and contributions. He was named to the Housing Honor Roll by the Housing Opportunity Commission in Montgomery County, Maryland, in 1985, and the recipient of the Hebrew Home for the Aged in 1986, the distinguished service award by the National Governments Association in Traverse City, Michigan, the Joseph Ottenstein Award from the Jewish Social Service Agency in 1988, and a humanitarian award from Jewish service organization B'nai B'rith. Mr. Cohen was further named the Washingtonian of the Year by Washingtonian Magazine in 1986, presented to residents making a difference, as well as recognized as the recipient of a JCC Award and the Jewish Community Relations Council Award. His achievements have also earned him inclusion in the 22nd edition of Who's Who in the East, published in 1988.

Prior to embarking on his professional career, Mr. Cohen earned his Bachelor of Science in economics at the prestigious Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, located in Philadelphia, in 1949. He was born on April 2, 1927, in Washington, D.C., to Aaron N. and Bessie Gensberg Cohen. Mr. Cohen and his wife, Joy A. Weiss, have been happily married for more than 60 years and enjoy living in Maryland. Together, they are the proud parents of five children: Barry (Kamal), Alan, Brian (Madeleine), Douglas (Sheri) and Daniel. They are also the doting grandparents of one grandson, Samuel Alexander Cohen, and one granddaughter, Sunitha Cohen Barron (Joshua). Well-regarded for his kind and approachable nature, Mr. Cohen's nickname is "the doughnut man," a moniker he earned because of his affinity for delivering donuts to his friends.
