Inspired by his father, who was a chemical engineer, Jack Andrew Wagner Jr. embarked upon his professional path in his youth, repairing an abandoned radio which sparked his interest in electrical engineering. Following this experience, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1972. Mr. Wagner formally began his career as a manager of distribution engineering for the Chattanooga Electric Power Board from 1972 to 2003.

Subsequently, Mr. Wagner was briefly active with the Tennessee Valley Authority from 2003 to 2004, before accepting a position with Sargent & Lundy in 2004. He concluded his career after retiring from Sargent & Lundy in 2014. Civically, he has served as the co-chair for the Chattanooga Regional Engineering and Science Fair and an Eagle Scout of the Boy Scouts of America. A member of Eta Kappa Nu, Mr. Wagner is also affiliated with the Chattanooga Engineers Club, for which he held the post of the president in 1998.

The highlight of Mr. Wagner's career was being able to influence his seven grandchildren with science and magic. He was proud to have instilled some curiosity in their minds.
