With more than 37 years' experience with Phillips Petroleum Company, Mr. Harling was an authority in his industry. He began his career with Phillips as a clerk in their Omaha, NE warehouse. He served Phillips as a district manager for upstate New York from their Madison, NJ office from 1962 until 1973, Minneapolis, MN during the late 1970's and St. Louis, MO from 1980 until 1985. He then was manager of wholesale and supply in Bartlesville, OK until he retired in 1986. Notably, following retirement Mr. Harling was asked to serve on the board of directors for Phillips Petroleum Company's Political Action Committee, which he did until moving to NC in 1996.
After serving overseas as a corporal in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953, Mr. Harling pursued higher education. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Omaha in 1955 and a certificate from the University of Arizona in 1979.
While in St. Louis Mr. Harling was a member of Sales and Marketing Executives Club and Rotary. While in Bartlesville, OK, Harling volunteered in his community. He was elected to a 5 year term on the board of education for Tri-County Regional Vocational-Technical School where he served as board vice president. He served on the board of directors and as board president for the Adoption Center 0f Eastern Oklahoma and was a volunteer there. He served on the Bartlesville Council of Social Services, the Bartlesville Area Chamber of Commerce and United Way. He also served two terms as a member of the board of Hillcrest Country Club where he and his wife were both members. During his time in Bartlesville he was a member of the Rotary Club, and club president, continuing a membership in Rotary beginning in Madison, NJ in 1966. His Rotary membership has continued until the present, following his move to North Carolina.
After moving Mr. Harling volunteered at the local Coalition for Human Care where he served two six year terms on their board of directors and two years as board president. He continue to volunteer there. On April 15, 2015 Mr. Harling was one of twenty volunteers receiving the State of North Carolina Governor's Medallion Award for Volunteer Service in the lifetime achievement category presented by Governor Pat McCrory. Mr. Harling received the Cornerstone Award from United Way for volunteer achievements in 2019.
Mr. Harling married his wife MarJeanne Borg in 1953 and they have three children. During Mr. Harling's career he served four three year terms as an elder at different Presbyterian churches.
In light of his many contributions to the field, he has been featured in the 23'd edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
