With more than 30 years of professional experience, Ms. O'Brien retired in 2004, having been director of trusts and investments at Hillsdale College since 1992. Prior to performing this role, she was the trusts and investments administrator and corporate assistant secretary at the Free Methodist Foundation from 1989 to 1992, an investment broker with A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc., from 1986 to 1989, and a registered representative of the American Express Company from 1985 to 1986. From 1980 to 1985, she worked as the executive secretary to the president of Camp International, Inc., and from 1975 to 1980, she was the assistant director of admissions at Spring Arbor University. Earlier in her career, Ms. O'Brien was the owner and partner of Country Peddler Gift Shop from 1972 to 1975.

A respected voice in her areas of interest, Ms. O'Brien has been an active leader in her community. The former president of Hearthstone Enterprises, Inc., she is a former member of the Jackson County Hospital Finance Authority, the Jackson Area Estate Planning Council and the National Committee on Planned Giving, and the former co-owner of Idyll Hour Coffeehouse. She previously served as president of the Concord, Michigan, Board of Education, as secretary of Jackson County Republicans, and member of the Spring Arbor Township Historical Committee. In addition, she has been the organist and choir director of the First Presbyterian Church of Concord since 2003.

Throughout her career, Ms. O'Brien has been recognized for her contributions. She has received many awards and accolades for her achievements. She has also been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women. She is currently a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Association of University Women.

Daughter of W. Raymond McClung and Erma Ruth Gilbert McClung, Ms. O'Brien (previously married to George E. Kline) is married to William T. O'Brien and is the mother of three children—Alexandra Kline Metricarti, George Ellis Kline IV, and Elizabeth Kline Strodtbeck. She enjoys studying genealogy in her spare time. She is the author of "The Klines of Evanston: 1848 to 1968," "Sketches from the Western Frontier: The Level Family and the Gilbert Family," and "Fishing Tales and Boat Sails." She also enjoys the study of music and receives much pleasure from having been the initial piano teacher of six of her seven grandchildren.
