An accomplished listee, Dr. Degler celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Drawing upon 51 years of practiced experience in academia, Dr. Degler received a Bachelor of Arts from Upsala College in 1942. Upon graduation, he was drafted into the United States Air Force, serving as a weather observer until 1945. When he returned to civilian life, Dr. Degler attended Columbia University in New York, earning a Master of Arts in 1947 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1952. He completed an additional Master of Arts from the University of Oxford in England in 1973 and was named a Harmsworth professor at Oxford from 1973 to 1974. He then completed his education with two Doctor of Laws degrees from Ripon College in 1976 and Colgate University in 1978.

At the inception of his career, Dr. Degler was an adjunct professor of American history at various institutions in New York from 1947 to 1952 before joining the faculty of Vassar College as a professor of history. He remained at Vassar until 1968, serving as head of the history department from 1966 to 1968. From 1968 to 1998, Dr. Degler was a professor of American history at Stanford University, attaining emeritus status in 1990. He also served as a Margaret Byrne professor of American history at Stanford between 1972 and 1990. He is most proud of the 23 graduate students whom he oversaw during his years at Stanford, who went on to teach in institutions throughout the United States and Japan.

Dr. Degler is extensively published, and his works include the book "Neither Black Nor White," a winner of the 1972 Pulitzer Prize in History, a 1972 Bancroft Prize, and a 1971 Beveridge Prize. Likewise, he was recently featured in the article "A New Americanism: Why a Nation Needs a National Story" in 2019. Other literary works to his credit include "Age of Economic Revolution," "Affluence and Anxiety," "Out of Our Past" and "In Search of Human Nature: The Decline and Revival of Darwinism in American Social Thought," among others. Likewise, he sat on the board of editors of American Quarterly, the Journal of Southern History and the Journal of Family History, and is a past editorial board member of "Plantation Society" and "Signs: Women in Culture and Society." Dr. Degler was elected president of the Organization of American Historians, the Southern Historical Association and the American Historical Association.

Dr. Degler has received numerous accolades for his work. He was named a Guggenheim fellow from 1972 to 1973, and a National Endowment of the Humanities fellow from 1976 to 1977 and again from 1983 to 1984. The recipient of the Ralph Waldo Emerson Prize from Phi Beta Kappa for his literary achievements, he was also deemed an American Council of Learned Societies fellow from 1964 to 1965.
