Now retired, Dr. Hofstetter flourished as an educator and a scientist for 40 years. As a senior scientist for the Savannah River National Laboratory between 2004 and 2007, he developed nuclear instrumentation and training for first responders for the US Department of Homeland Security. From 1987 to 2007, he was an advisory scientist for the Westinghouse Savannah River Company in Aiken, SC conducting research in the area of nuclear non-proliferation. From 1980 to 1987, Dr. Hofstetter excelled as a radiochemistry engineering supervisor for the GPU Nuclear Corporation in Middletown, Pennsylvania, assisting in the decontamination and defueling of the Three Mile Island (TMI-2) reactor. Dr. Hofstetter had been working for Allied General Nuclear Services since 1974 as a radiochemistry supervisor at the nuclear fuel reprocessing facility in Barnwell, SC when called up to support TMI-2 recovery operations following the 1979 accident.

Prior to his career in the nuclear industry, he taught nuclear and radiochemistry at the University of Kentucky in Lexington between 1969 and 1974. In addition to teaching, he conducted basic research in nuclear spectroscopy and supervised graduate student studies. To supplement his research, he was the recipient of grants from the Research Corporation in 1972 and the National Science Foundation in 1973. Dr. Hofstetter began his academic career at Texas A&M University where he was an instructor and a postdoctoral researcher from 1967 to 1969.

Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Hofstetter pursued a formal education at Augustana College in Illinois, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. Subsequently, he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy from Purdue University in 1967. During his graduate studies, he married his wife Marilyn in 1965 and they had two children. To remain knowledgeable of changes in the field, Dr. Hofstetter maintains his professional affiliation with the American Nuclear Society and the American Chemical Society.

An expert in the industry, Dr. Hofstetter has contributed over 40 articles to professional journals. As an example of his continued support of the academic community, he has established an endowed scholarship at Augustana College for new students majoring in STEM disciplines. Likewise, he has been selected for inclusion in editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the South and Southwest. Outside of his primary responsibilities, Dr. Hofstetter enjoys golf, tennis, community theater, swimming, chorus and being with his three grandchildren in his spare time.
