With a legal career spanning more than 65 years, Mr. Nicholas is president of the Hapsmith Company, a notable real estate law firm. Mr. Nicholas served as a captain in the United States Army from 1941 to1946, including two years stationed in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Southern France, and the Philippines. He began his educational career in 1947 at the University of Southern California, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts before completing postgraduate work at the University of Chicago from 1949 to 1950. He returned to the University of Southern California to complete his education, graduating with a JD in 1952. Mr. Nicholas was licensed to practice law by the State Bar of California and became an associate at Loeb & Loeb in Los Angeles, California, where he remained until 1956.
Shopping center development became Mr. Nicholas' professional signature, and he authored many commercial real estate deals at the firm of Swerdlow, Glikbarg & Nicholas, where he was a partner from 1956 to 1962, and in private practice from 1962 to1980, before founding the Hapsmith Company, where he continues to practice law. Mr. Nicholas authored multiple books about commercial real estate development during this time, including "Setting Up a Shopping Center" in 1960 and "Commercial Real Property Lease Practice" in 1976.
Mr. Nicholas is a noted philanthropist and supporter of the arts. He served as a trustee of the LA Philharmonic Association from 1987 to 1995 and the Annenberg Foundation for Performing Arts from 2011 to 2014, and chairman of the California Public Broadcasting Commission from 1972 to 1978, among other organizations. He was the founder of Public Counsel, the largest pro bono law firm in the U.S. He has received numerous accolades for both his legal and his philanthropic work, having been presented with a community service award from the American Institute of Architects in 2006 and the Equal Justice Advocacy award from the ACLU Foundation in 2005.
