Dr. Nelson began her path to medicine by attending the University of Minnesota, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1962 and a Bachelor of Science in 1963. She returned to the University of Minnesota for a Doctor of Medicine, graduating in 1965. She had always been interested in working with people, and a childhood fascination with science and medicine led her to pursue it as a career path.

t the inception of her career, Dr. Nelson became a consultant in internal medicine and rheumatology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, from 1972 to 2002 and to associate professor at the Mayo Medical School from 1976 to 2000 and to professor from 2000 to present. In 1993, she was named chair of pediatric rheumatology at the Mayo Medical School, a role she held through 2001. She was granted emeritus status in 2002. From 1985 to 2006, Dr. Nelson also acted as a consultant to staff at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Dr. Nelson is a diplomate in internal medicine and rheumatology of the American Board of Internal Medicine. She was the first woman to be elected to the board of governors of the Mayo Clinic, serving from 1982 to 1989 and becoming vice president from 1989 to 1992. Dr. Nelson was further a trustee of the Mayo Foundation from 1982 to 1993. She considers these leadership roles to be a highlight of her career.

Civically involved as well, Dr. Nelson was vice-chair of the Rochester Christ United Methodist Church Board of Trustees from 1999 to 2001 and chair from 2001 to 2002. Likewise, she was a trustee of the church from 1995 to 2002. A master of the American College of Rheumatology and fellow of the American College of Physicians, American College of Pediatrics and American Medical Association, she served as president-elect of the American Group Practice Association in 1996 and chair of the board of directors of the American Medical Group Association from 1997 to 1998. Likewise, she was a trustee of the Minnesota Medical Association from 1985 to 2002, from whom she received a Distinguished Service Award in 1999.

As a testament to her success, Dr. Nelson was the recipient of the Woman of Achievement Award from the YWCA, the Alumni Recognition Award from the University of Minnesota Alumni Medical Society and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Mayo Clinic. She was also named Woman Physician of the Year by Alpha Epsilon Iota and earned a Distinguished Service Award from the American College of Rheumatology. Highlighted in myriad Who's Who publications, she enjoys sailing in her spare time.
