Growing up on a Nebraska farm, Dr. Kohlmeier developed a passion for the agricultural industry early in his life, inspiring his 60-year career in animal nutrition. He initially graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science-Technical Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1959. Dr. Kohlmeier concluded his education at Iowa State University, obtaining his Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Nutrition in 1966 and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1968. Awards were Gold Key, Alpha Zeta, Gamma Sigma Delta, Sigma Xi, Phi Zeta, Phi Eta Sigma and Walnut Grove.

Upon his graduation, Dr. Kohlmeier became an associate professor at Iowa State University, a position in which he would serve from 1968 to 1973. He greatly enjoyed teaching veterinary and graduate students. From 1973 to 1975, he worked as a research veterinarian and beef nutritionist at the United States Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center, Nebraska. A highlight of Dr. Kohlmeier 's career was his tenure at the Andersons in Maumee, Ohio, from 1975 to 1984, where he supervised all technical aspects of formulation, quality control, research and development of the company's livestock, dog and zoo feeds plus was a Limited Partner.

Dr. Kohlmeier found success as a manger of technical services at Nutrius in Manson, Iowa, from 1984 to 1987. Subsequently, he accepted a position as the technical director of animal nutrition for the American Soybean Association at their world headquarters in Saint Louis from 1988 to 1992. He gave technical seminars multiple times in more than 30 developing countries plus authored a handbook and book chapter. In 1992 he formed Kohlmeier Consulting and Specializing in animal nutrition. His primary clients were the American Soybean Association and Monsanto. In retirement, he is enjoying umpiring softball, square and round dancing plus Cards baseball and Big Red Football.

Dr. Kohlmeier was a licensed veterinarian in Iowa, Nebraska and Ohio, and is a member of the American Society of Animal Science, American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists as a Charter Diplomate of the American College of Animal Nutrition. He served in the rank of second lieutenant in the United States Army Field Artillery from 1959 to 1960, and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the United States Army Reserve Veterinary Corps. He commanded an Army Reserve Veterinary Corps unit in Ames, Iowa for more than 13 years. During that time the unit received four Superior Unit Certificates from the Secretary of the Army. He was awarded an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Greater Des Moines Chamber of Commerce, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with the First Oak Leaf Cluster, the Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Service Award and was retired from the United States Army in 1996. Dr. Kohlmeier credits his early support from his parents, teachers and church leaders, as well as the continued support of his wife and his mentors for his enduring success.
